I’m not sure if I’ve ever been more excited for a Wednesday than I am now. Pat yourselves on the back hockey fans, you did it. The long offseason has come to an end and from here to roughly April they’re calling for nothing but the Buffalo Sabres. Who’s excited for the some Buffalo Sabres news and action?
With the Traverse City Prospects tournament wrapping up last night, and the Sabres finishing 2nd after going 3-1 through the four game tournament, there will be a few prospects who earned an invite to the main Sabres training camp beginning on Wednesday.
Today the Buffalo Sabres announced their roster invites for Training Camp, with around 60 players reporting to camp on Wednesday.
The veterans Ryan Miller, Thomas Vanek, Jhonas Enroth, Tyler Myers, Tyler Ennis, Cody Hodgson, Christian Ehrhoff, Mike Weber and Steve Ott will be the cornerstone of the Sabres roster for 2013-2014. Who will be joining the veterans? Top rookies including the two first round draft picks from 2012 Mikhail Grigorenko and Zemgus Girgensons, Joel Armia, Luke Adam defenceman Mark Pysyk, Brayden McNabb, Marcus Foligno, Chad Rehwedel and 2013 first round picks Rasmus Ristolainen and Nikita Zadorov.
Traverse City standout Nick Baptiste earned himself an invite to camp after his phenomenal tournament. Recently acquired Daniel Catenacci and Johan Larsson have also earned camp invites. 2012 draft picks Logan Nelson, Justin Kea and free agent Frederick Roy will also be in attendance. Perhaps the biggest surprise, former Toronto Maple Leafs’ forward Mike Zigomanis has been invited to the Sabres camp.
Late 2013 pick Justin Bailey, former Columbus Blue Jackets Colton Gillies and 2011 draft pick Colin Jacobs, career AHLer Jamie Tardif and 2011 free agent signing Shawn Szydlowski round out the group of forwards.
On defence 2012 draft pick Brady Austin, 2008 draft pick Nick Crawford, 2010 draft pick Matt MacKenzie and 2006 draft pick Jamie McBain will fight for spots on the blueline during camp.
Goalies, Matt Hackett, Connor Knapp, Nathan Lieuwen and Andrey Markarov will battle it out to see who will be Miller’s replacement.

With 60 players invited to camp, there is bound to be lots of competition but lots of prospects will be sent packing. I’m looking forward to seeing Daniel Catenacci, Justin Bailey, Johan Larsson, Nick Baptiste, Rasmus Ristolainen and Nikita Zadorov battle it out for a chance to wear the blue and gold. Either way it’s bound to be one exciting camp. Who are you most looking forward to seeing hit the ice on Thursday?
