Poll: Who Fits Better on the Top Line- Armia or Foligno?

Throughout the preseason one of the safest bets to begin the regular season together is the top line duo of Cody Hodgson and Thomas Vanek. The question is who will join them on the top line? The first player to get his crack at the top line was Marcus Foligno and he made a pretty impressive impact notching two goals. The second player to get a shot playing with the top line duo was rookie Joel

Much like Foligno, Armia had a solid performance skating alongside Vanek and Hodgson. Which may mean it doesn’t matter who Ron Rolston decides to put with the pair as they’ll feed off the skill of the other two. Armia scored a beautiful goal in last nights 5-2 Sabres win over the Carolina Hurricanes, after he picked off the netminders pass and stuffed the puck in the back of the net. In addition to his great goal, he also sparked great chemistry with Vanek and Hodgson and fed a beautiful pass to Vanek who was able to hook up with Hodgson for another goal.

There’s a lot of debate surrounding if Armia will even crack the squad out of preseason as he could use a little more time to get used to the North American game. But a lot of people aren’t satisfied with Foligno filling the void on the top line. So far (just two games) both players have been able to spark chemistry with Vanek and Hodgson on the top line, but there’s only room for one.

Which will it be, Armia or Foligno?

Right now, I think that spot belongs to Foligno. He has a little more NHL experience and is willing to do some of the dirty work to set up his linemates. Foligno is very mature for his age and is ready to take that next step, where as Armia is still young and has more time to improve before a full-time stint in the NHL. For right now I’d give the stick tap to Foligno and keep him with Vanek and Hodgson to begin the season, but as always it’s up to you Sabres’ fans.

My question; Who belongs on the top line with Cody Hodgson and Thomas Vanek, should it be Joel Armia or Marcus Foligno? Or perhaps go back with Drew Stafford or another young Sabre.

Let Armia spend a couple of months in Rochester, same with Risto.

Definitely agree about Armia needing to spend some time in the A but I’m not sold on Ristolainen, everything we’ve seen shows he’s ready for the NHL

tough Call. they both played stellar in their games on the top line. The issue is Vanek and Foligno are both left wings. During the game Foligno played, Vanek was shifted to RW. He looked a little out of place. Id prefer Vanek being in his natural position therefore Armia gets the upper hand. Now if Rolston could get some chemistry between Foligno-Grigorenko-Leino i see that being a dominant second line.

    • Caitlin Campbell

I think Rolston is hoping to keep Ott with Grigo and Leino, which means Foligno would fall to the 3rd line with Larsson. I agree that Vanek would benefit from his more natural position, so they could always move Foligno to the other side.

This is a no brainer, Foligno has the NHL experience. Armia will be playing in the AHL when the season starts and Stafford needs a change of scenery.

    • erico

I wouldnt count Armia out. Its not like he doesnt have experience, hes been playing with older guys in Finland for 3 seasons. The only adjustment he needs to make is the smaller ice surface.

      • davidmuscalo

He also needs to adjust to physicality and speed of the game in the NHL.

        • erico

and hes doing that. Traverse City Tourny + preseason might be all he needs, especially with guidance from being on a line with vanek

          • Caitlin Campbell

I’d still like to see him spend a little time with Rochester to kick off the season.

    • Caitlin Campbell

I agree that Armia needs to start the year in the AHL
