Chad Ruhwedel‘s NHL career started in the NHL – signed by the Buffalo Sabres to fill out a depleted defensive unit at the end of the shortened lockout season. This year he didn’t play well enough to
keep his blue and gold sweater on, so he is down on the farm.
Don’t tell him things are different, as he and Phil Varone made sure there was extra time last night against the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins. Eric Locke needed little more than half the overtime period to put things away and get the Rochester Americans out on the right foot for the 2013 pre season campaign.
Nathan Lieuwen and Connor Knapp combined for the victory in the net for Rochester, turning aside a combined nineteen shots. Both goalies gave up a goal in the first two periods – but the teams skated to a scoreless third forcing the overtime.
Rochester never trailed in the game. They outshot the Penguins 32-21.
The Rochester Americans and Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins close out the American Hockey League pre season schedule with a game on Friday a the Mohegan Sun Arena.
Regular season action starts for the Rochester Americans on Friday October 4 against the reigning Calder Cup champion Grand Rapids Griffins.
