The Buffalo Sabres Award Thomas Vanek AND Steve Ott With The Captaincy

In a bit of a surprise move, the Buffalo Sabres have decided to go with two players wearing the C as the 2013-2014 NHL season opens.

The Sabres revealed via Twitter that Thomas Vanek and Steve Ott will be wearing the C at various points throughout the regular season.  Here’s the reveal:

Not surprisingly, the Twitterverse exploded, with fans displaying a mix of emotions that go from “OMG, this is amazing!” to ‘Seriously, guys?  What a letdown.”

Why two captains, you may ask?    Again, let’s let Twitter do the talking!

This is not the first time that the Buffalo Sabres have used dual-captains, as both Chris Drury and Danny Briere served as captains during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 campaigns.

Christian Ehrhoff has been named the alternate captain, which is really the only thing NOT surprising about today’s announcement.

The announcement has stunned me a bit, so I don’t honestly have an opinion right now.  It certainly is not a terrible idea, but will fans (myself included) view this as a cop-out once they have had time to mull the decision over?  Ott was definitely the fan favorite to wear the C heading up to today, while Vanek’s being awarded the C would have come across as more of a “lifetime achievement award,” as one of our readers put it.  Is this Rolston’s way of satiating Vanek and the fan base at the same time?

Regardless, it certainly makes the Sabres’ captaincy situation a fairly unique one in today’s NHL.  Tune in for more reaction by the Sabre Noise staff as today progresses!
