As I’m sure you all have heard by now, the Buffalo Sabres and Ron Rolston will be naming the next captain of the Buffalo Sabres at some point today. The anticipation for the announcement which many fans have been waiting for since the summer is growing as every minute clicks off the clock, but one of the names being thrown around today is defenceman Mike Weber.
is Mike Weber. When you think about it, Mike Weber is pretty much the perfect guy to wear the C right now for the Sabres.
From the direction the Sabres are heading in and with everything Ron Rolston has said to the media, you get the sense they’re looking for a younger player who will grow with the team, but still has that veteran presence. When you look around the room there’s not too many players that fit that bill. There’s Cody Hodgson who could very well be captain one day but isn’t ready quite yet, Marcus Foligno is far too young and inexperienced and although they fit the veteran role there’s no guarantee Vanek or Ott will be sticking around.
Which brings us to number 6 on the blue line. Weber is a leader in his own way, sure he flies under the radar for the most part but he’s been known to speak up before and not to mention he’s a solid defenceman. At 25 Weber is still in one of the younger player and with just 4 years of experience under his belt he still has a long career ahead and has stated that he wants to stay in Buffalo.
Although Weber is a young player, he’s an extremely mature hockey player who has great hockey IQ and would be a fantastic lead by example captain. But perhaps the best thing about Weber is that he understands his role with the Sabres and does his role, he doesn’t try to do too much he just plays his role. He understands that he’s more of a shutdown, physical defenceman who isn’t going to score many goals or lead many rushes like Tyler Myers and that’s what makes him so successful. Weber understands his role and play to it like a tee.
Mike Weber is young, mature, skilled and is under contract through the 2016 NHL season- he’s the perfect captain candidate. He isn’t going to bolt after this season, seems to love the city and the team and will be a solid captain. He’d be willing to drop the mitts going to war for his teammates, he blocks shots and kills penalties, what more could you want?
If the Buffalo Sabres want to their captain to be young and grow with the team than the two best options are Cody Hodgson and Mike Weber. Right now Weber is more mature and has more experience, he’s ready for the C more than Hodgson is and should be right at the front of the captain talks.
