There is no sense in walking around on eggshells about this season – if the year progresses and looks very similar to what we saw last night, Thomas Vanek will not be
around next year – and could even finish the season out somewhere else near the trade deadline.
News out of Minnesota is that they have signed Jason Pominville to a five year contract extension, keeping him in a Wild sweater. Terms of the deal were not released, however it looks like the contract is worth about 28 million dollars according to TSN. The new deal will keep Pominville under contract through the end of the 2018-2019 season – he has one more year on his current contract.
It is worth nothing the contract signing of Pominville with another team – given his relationship with Thomas Vanek – and Vanek’s contract situation here in Buffalo.
If things don’t get better for the Buffalo Sabres – this could be a very entertaining option for Thomas Vanek to rejoin his best friend and former teammate in a state of hockey that Vanek is familiar with – as Vanek is an alum of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.
If Thomas Vanek is looking for a long term solution – he would likely enjoy the thought of playing in Minnesota again – and having a familiar linemate.
I can’t say with certainty that the Minnesota Wild would trade for Vanek at the deadline – but you can bet they will be a willing suitor come free agency if Vanek hits the open market.
