Hard to think that with a 4-1 loss to Eastern Conference newcomer like the Columbus Blue Jackets, there would be even the slightest of clues to which Buffalo Sabres were stars.
Third Star: Christian Ehrhoff- Despite the defense showing up very little, if at all, Ehrhoff, not surprisingly, has been the most consistent defenseman we have had. Posting a +1 tonight, it was Ehrhoff’s play that kept the puck in Columbus’ zone which ended with Thomas Vanek putting the puck past Bobrovsky. If our defense played like Ehrhoff does, there wouldn’t be any way that 30+ shots reach either goaltender every night. Cut down the shots allowed, in turn we cut down any rebound and cut down the amount of goals we give up.
Second Star: Ryan Miller- No surprise, as the veteran netminder faced 33 shots tonight, and despite letting in four of those shots, he still maintained a relatively strong composure and was able to calm himself down. Since this was his first start since his groin injury, I feel he can be cut a bit of a break since he has faced 113 shots and has only allowed 7 goals, with a .938 save percentage. He needs help, and that is why I feel he deserves the second star. Keep up the pace Millsy.
First Star: Thomas Vanek- With a goal tonight adding to his 1 goal and 2 assists, I give Vanek the first star because he was able to manage 6 shots against Bobrovsky, and a neat little redirection through Bobrovsky’s legs was a nice sight to see. Vanek seems to be settling down from his lacking start to the season and is looking more and more fluid as each game goes on.
Again, naming stars from the win is a very hard task to do, especially when there aren’t many highlights to come. But those three stars have definitely earned the title for the night.
