Buffalo Sabres - Vancouver Canucks Fan Prediction Thread

Buffalo Sabres fans, and my dear Sabre Noise readers, it’s game day.

And I have to say, I am looking forward to tonight’s match-up between the Sabres and the Canucks.

As crummy as the Sabres’ 1-6-1 start to this season has been at times, there have been flashes of promise, tantalizing glimpses of a level of play that would make Buffalo competitive on a nightly basis in the NHL if only this team could develop some consistency.  This team’s potential became evident in the third period of the Sabres’ game against the Chicago Blackhawks, and definitely was on display as the Sabres overcame three one-goal deficits the other night against the New York Islanders.  Could it be that this team is starting to gel, and that we are in for a better season than we would have predicted before Tuesday night’s breakthrough?

I certainly hope so.  I also hope that the Sabres start to play a bit better at home; their best play has come on the road so far, with the team looking a little more shaky and less confident on their home ice in the First Niagara Center.  It would be nice for the Sabres to give the home crowd something to really cheer about tonight as the host the Canucks.

My questions for you to consider:

1. Can Johan Larsson score his first NHL goal tonight?  I sure hope so.

2. The Canucks average just under 3 (2.86) goals per game.  Can the Sabres keep up with them offensively?

3. Which Drew Stafford will show up – the one we have seen the last 2-3 games, or last year’s version?

Join the discussion, have fun, and go Sabres!

    1. I only expect Larsson to score about 10 goals this year, so statistically speaking, I’m erring on the side of no for tonight.
    2. Actually yes. Roberto Luongo is only rocking a .899 right now and the Canucks still have some kinks to work out in Tortarella’s system. I could see the Sabres putting up 3 or more goals on the Canucks, if and only if they can get to Strombone early and put some doubt in his head. The first goal will be very important tonight.

    3. I just had a thought and I’m gonna go look into this, but is Drew Stafford better on the road than at home? I feel like he is. It would make sense. Fans are done with him, and the toxic vibe is palpable when he’s on the ice. With that in mind, I’ll say Normal Drew shows up.

3-2 Sabres. What the heck. If they score the first goal and put some pressure on the Canucks early, they can win against a beatable team that maybe should have lost to Philly a couple days ago.

I agree that Larsson will not score a ton of goals this year. His impact is felt in a lot of areas, though.

Oh yeah, and I really like Larsson. I think he tops out as a 20G guy who kills penalties and plays a tough game. Definitely fun to think about him and Girgensons on a shut down line in the future.

I honestly feel this could be a blowout game in favour of the Canucks, I don’t know why but I have a feeling this game won’t go well. Now whether it’s a blowout on the scoreboard or Ryan Miller stands on his head is still to be determined but I could see this ending up 4-1 Canucks easily.
I don’t expect Larsson to score but I could see Stafford potting one tonight.
Hopefully I’m wrong and the Sabres get another W with Miller, but I got a bad feeling.

      Common Caitlin 4-1 isn’t a blowout haha

      • Caitlin Campbell

Right sorry about that I meant a blowout in the game play not the score because of Miller. Basically the Canucks dominate everything but Miller once again keeps it close.

You were right and the 3 goal margin of victory was spot on. Well done.

What does she win? Season tickets to the Sabres! I got them cheap.

          Ha ha.

If the Sabres want to keep this game within reach they need to jump on the Canucks early and often, and get at least a three goal lead built up. I could see this easily as a breakout game for the Canucks though – the Sabres lack any chemistry with the constant line juggling.

    4-2 Buffalo.

Scorers : Vanek, Stafford, Porter, Hodgson

Vancouver struggled against a terrible Flyers team the other night. I think they will continue to struggle against the Sabres. I don’t see any rooks scoring goals, but they could chip in with assists. Let’s go with 3-2 Buffalo, with Stafford getting at least a point.

  • davidmuscalo

Yes, the team has started to gel. One of the reasons is Stafford’s play. He has done some good things lately: like digging the puck out of the corners, charging the net, shooting the puck and getting into the face of the opposing goalie.

As for Larrson, I don’t expect a lot from him as far as scoring goals. This is a learning experience for him this season and he is basically just along for the ride.

As for the game tonight, Vancouver is certainly the more experienced and accomplished team, but, if my memory is correct, they haven’t had a lot of success in Buffalo in the past. I could see the Sabres winning tonight on the strength of Miller’s goal tending.

Late prediction guys. Sorry I was at hospital since 7AM PT.

I’m thinking 5-2 Sabres. We’re gonna chase Luongo out of net.

    1. No, not today. But he will get an assist.
    2. Hellz yes!!
    3. Dreeeeeeeeew Stafford although I hate him he’ll pot two tonight. Atta boy Stafford get your trade value up.

1-0 Canucks right now lol. Make sure you guys watch the third;)

Hope everything is okay! Your prediction, btw, is NOT okay. :D

      • Jes

Tell me about it Rich. Lol I predict five goals by these Sabres but they couldn’t even muster one.
