Steve Ott And Buffalo Ready To Part Ways?

It appears that the curse of the Buffalo Sabres captaincy is on the verge of striking one more time.  With teams looking to solidify their rosters

amid injuries and openings, the Sabres’ rebuilding ways have many players in Blue and Gold available at the right price.

There is no secret that the Buffalo Sabres are going to shop Ryan Miller – and will likely move him to whatever team will pay the kings ransom that Darcy Regier is asking.

Who else though – is deemed trade eligible by the Buffalo Sabres?  It sounds like anyone on the team is fair game lately – including existing team captain Steve Ott.

Rumors are swirling that several teams are interested in the services of the Buffalo Sabres gritty forward – and that despite his willingness and supposed love for the city and team that traded Derek Roy for him – may be on the move again.

Take it for what you will – but Eklund reported on Monday that the Tampa Bay Lightning and Chicago Blackhawks are interested in Steve Ott.  It would not be the first time rumors surfaced regarding Buffalo and Tampa.  Any deal with Chicago would come closer to the deadline.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in play here as well, as they will be looking to replace David Bolland who will be out indefinitely after having surgery and Tyler Bozak.  Could Toronto be looking for Steve Ott to fill that 3rd line center role and help with the faceoff void that is plaguing the Maple Leafs?

Eklund also is reporting that the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders are still talking.  Could they be talking Ryan Miller – who obviously would like to be headed West?

There are lots of questions that no amount of rumors are going to help quash – in fact it is only going to make it worse.

What I do know is that the Buffalo Sabres have a lot of problems to resolve – and aging unrestricted free agents – Matt Moulson, Ryan Miller, Steve Ott, Cody McCormick, John Scott, and Henrik Tallinder – may be playing their final games in a Buffalo Sabres sweater.

Oh! no not Eklund. he is worse than Kypreos. However, rumors being what they are, I would have to predict that Ott is likely to go nowhere but to DR’s office to sign a new contract. He is a keeper. As for the others, I agree. I will start my own rumor. Ott is going to sign before the season is over.

That’s why I said take it how you will!

Ott’s gonna be gone by trade deadline. He’s what 31 years old or something right? I believe he wants to win that cup before it’s too late. Weber isn’t enough to keep him in the Blue & Gold.

If I was Regier, the only way I would send Ott to Chicago would be for Patrick Kane and I’d throw in all my first and second round picks!

    • Jes

Chicago wouldn’t be that stupid. They have a dynasty on there hands. If any of there top players are on the market it’s Hossa and maybe Sharp.

  • Dano

I see it as a 50/50 in Ott staying. I am going out on a limb in believing that Regier could understand that his YOUTH needs some experience and leadership *IF* they are ever going to amount to something.

    • Andrew

I’m not convinced that DR understands that concept.

They better not get rid of him, he is next on my jersey list! My Connoly, Vanek, and Pominville jerseys are outdated!!

    • Ben Chalker

      Get a Girgensons one instead.

      • Jacob Breunig

Or blank, then your player will never leave town

        • Ben Chalker

true, but the team WILL change jerseys the week after you buy it.

    • BryanD

I won’t put any new players on the back of my jersey. Players come and go so much these days. Only names I’ll do are LaFontane, May, Hasek, Ray etc etc.

AS far as rumors go, who really knows or gives a s**t? Not until DR, the captain of our stinking, sinking ship get’s gone nothing we say will matter. Not the fan base that’s for damn sure!

  • Ben Chalker

I could see teams being interested in Ott. What he’d net in trade is the question though. I don’t think he’s worth a 1st rounder, but Darcy did pry a first out of Nashville for Gaustad so it’s not unprecedented.

For all the crap Darcy gets, the fact he got a 1st rounder for Gaustad is an incredible feat. And they say you can’t turn lead into gold!!

In addition to Ott you mention, in your parting comments, other players who are aging and unrestricted free agents. I agree with all you mentioned except Moulson. He’s a late bloomer and only 30, which is not old for a hockey player, but I also feel he is now coming into his own and will only get better. I think the Sabres should try and re-sign him…players like him don’t come along that often!
