The Buffalo Sabres skated for 60 minutes with the Detroit Red Wings tonight – and I can’t say that I hated the effort in the game despite the 3-1 final score.
What I can also say is – I don’t really hate the new jerseys now that I have seen them on the actual players during a game. Although I was seeing them on my television – I had a friend text me from the game to tell me they were far worse in person.
What I still hate is the amount of grey – on the sleeves, in the numbers, on the name plates, the pants and in the socks – grey should not be such a major color on your alternative sweater when the iconic colors of your franchise can be so much better represented. If the sweater didn’t have the blue cape on the back and all the grey – it would be much better. I would have had a great opening salvo of shots at the Sabres had they been buried by the Red Wings tonight – given the fact that these jerseys look so much like practice sweaters.
Penalties in the third period derailed any momentum that the Buffalo Sabres had – when the Sabres took their first penalty of the period, they were out shooting the Red Wings 5-0.
Cody Hodgson‘s goal in the first period was phenomenal – patience was the key and is the type of goal this team has been missing. Heads up hockey by Drew Stafford to even make that play possible. I am still not impressed with Stafford as a hockey player – but he has picked his game up since the regime change. The much more experienced Wings showed even more patience and had a 2-1 just past the midway point of the third.
Great job by the referee on getting the penalty shot call right on Steve Ott. Only problem is – it was Steve Ott on the breakaway and on the penalty shot. Do you think the Sabres bench reacts the same way when they see Ott skating in alone on the opposing goaltender? Ott has gotten behind the defense a couple times so far this year, but it always ends poorly for number 9.
Three games in a row Buffalo gets the first goal of the game – gives it up quickly and never get back in the game.
