Okay, Mr. Leino. Did you enjoy your day off yesterday? I was tempted to bring you into the office for a pep talk following the Sabres’ loss to the Senators
Thursday night, but it’s like I told you before the Ottawa game: the match-up just wasn’t a good one for you. Honestly, it wasn’t a good match-up for anyone on the Sabres, since Craig Anderson was locked in right from the opening puckdrop, so there’s no reason to dwell on it. Onward and upward, with the puck going inward!
As I check your career stats, I see you have only played three regulation games against the Calgary Flames. Each time, you were playing for a different team, but each time the results were the same: zero points. I’m not too worried about that, however, as three games is not exactly a good sample size. Here’s the statistic that should interest us the most today: the Calgary Flames have the third-worst defense in the NHL, giving up an average of 3.23 goals per game. Heck, even the Sabres average less than 3 per, and you skate against them every practice! I bet you score on your teammates, so if you can score on Buffalo, you can score on Calgary!
My advice: don’t press. I know you want to get that monkey off of your back, if only to put a temporary end to the “Ville Leino is the most overpaid player in the NHL” talk. When you press, though, you get tight, and those little chip shots in front of the net wide up sailing high, or you whiff altogether. Battle along the boards, set up in front of the net when your teammates have the puck, and let’s put the biscuit in the basket today, eh?
