This Day In Buffalo Sabres History: December 21

In their last two games the Buffalo Sabres have scored 8 goals.  Before that it took

them six games to score eight goals.  This will be the 20th time the Sabres play on December 21st, and have a 13-4-2 record.  They will also be trying for their first three game winning streak of the season, and the chance to go 3-0 in this weeks competition.

On this day in 1975 – two members of the Buffalo Sabres scored hat tricks, with Rick Martin adding four goals to the tally, and Fred Stanfield getting three, as the Buffalo Sabres players combined for a franchise record 40 points in one game.  The final score, a 14-2 embarrassment of the Washington Capitals, the largest winning margin in franchise history as well.

Sixteen years later, another record is set, this time by Alexander Mogilny.  The Buffalo Sabres lose the opening faceoff but an aggressive forecheck allows Mogilny to get a shot on Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Jeff Reese just five seconds into the game.  The shot would beat Reese and Mogilny would have his record.

Watch the video to see the epic goal.  Fast forward to the 4:03 spot for Mogilney’s goal.  This year saw a goal in 10 seconds, will Mogilney’s record every be broken?  Can the Buffalo Sabres ever score more than 12 goals more than their opponent?
