In a game that will go down with a bit of history – the Buffalo Sabres skated with a short bench as the locker room bug known as flu-2013 – the Buffalo Sabres stayed in the game like they have for the most part all season, with Ryan Miller keeping them in a game, and Tyler Ennis scoring late in the third to salvage at least a point. In a game where elbows and butts will be the topic of reactions, not knees.
The good news for the Buffalo Sabres is they have three days off before they have to travel to face off against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Three days that they will be able to nurse their bench back to health.
The bad news is when they face off against the Maple Leafs they will most likely not have Drew Stafford for what will be the first game in most likely a five game suspension, ending 2013 for Drew Stafford. At the 11:16 mark of the second period, Drew Stafford was ejected from the hockey game as he used his elbow with quite a bit of liberty to protect the puck from the advancing Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
ICYMI – just moments before Ekman-Larsson roughed Stafford up along the wall pretty good – Stafford was no doubt upset over the affair.
I have no doubt in my mind that the Buffalo Sabres will be hearing from the league office that Drew Stafford will have a phone interview from the Department of Player Safety.
One a night when you saw John Scott playing in a ton of minutes for him (comparatively speaking). Scott was the only member of the team that didn’t hit ten minutes of ice time – but he saw time on the powerplay, defense – and John Scott is so much a “goon” as labeled by the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins fan base that he actually prevented Steve Ott from dropping the gloves tonight by just getting in the way and being a calming presence.
On October 20, 2013 Mike Smith joined an elite group of goaltenders by getting a goal, he makes history again by scoring with his butt tonight in overtime.
