Buffalo Sabres Three Stars VS Minnesota Wild

The Buffalo Sabres dropped another game to the Minnesota Wild – fortunately for the Sabres, this was the last meeting of the season. Not only did the Wild have the Sabres number this year, but so did former Sabre Jason Pominville. He not only scored his 18th of the season tonight against Ryan Miller, but he also had the game winning goal for the Wild on October 14th in Buffalo. The final score tonight was 4-1, as Minnesota had a 3 goal second period, and added an empty netter in the dying seconds of the game.

Third Star - Matt Ellis

Lets be honest, Ellis was at the right place at the right time. He did score the only goal of the night though, and none of the Sabres players really stood out in tonight’s loss. Ellis also contributed 1 hit, and 1 blocked shot in his 13+ minutes of ice-time.

Second Star – Ryan Miller

Miller was in net for 3 out of the 4 goals tonight, but wasn’t getting much help from his defense – unfortunately this has been the story of the season and it looks like it will continue into 2014. He made 28 saves tonight, and was the heart and soul of the penalty kill. I think Miller would like the Pominville goal back, but a goal like Jason Zucker‘s would not have been stopped by any goaltender in the league.

First Star - The Penalty Kill

The Sabres may have been scored on 4 times tonight, but none of which were a result of the Wild power play. Buffalo stopped Minnesota on all 4 of their power plays. The Wild were ranked 12th on the man-advantage coming into tonight but were stopped dead in their tracks by Miller and the rest of the penalty kill. Buffalo was ranked 16th on the penalty kill coming into tonight, and were the main reason why this game was not a horrendous blowout.
