Miller, Sabres Outlast Capitals To Win In SO

In his first game back from a hand injury, Cody Hodgson scored the lone goal in the shootout to put the Sabres past the Capitals by a final of 2-1.

Ryan Miller made 28 saves in the win for Buffalo (13-26-5). Philipp Grubauer got the start for the Capitals (22-16-7) and made 30 saves in the loss.

Washington got on the board first at 11:01 in the first period when Jason Chimera scored a fortunate goal with the help of Buffalo’s Bryan Flynn. Chimera threw a shot towards the net that deflected off of Flynn’s stick past Ryan Miller.

The Sabres answered late in the first period on the powerplay. At 18:09, Tyler Ennis picked up a rebound in front of Grubauer and buried it with a wrist shot. Cody Hodgson and Christian Ehrhoff assisted on the play.

The rest of the game remained scoreless and continued into overtime. There was no shortage of scoring chances but neither team was able to score again as both goaltenders played extremely well.

Miller stopped all three of Washington’s attempts in the shootout, and with their third shooter, Buffalo scored to earn the victory.  Hogdson froze Grubauer with several dekes before beating him glove side with a quick wrist shot.

The Sabres are back home this Tuesday to take on the Philadelphia Flyers.
