It was a dead giveaway for today’s history theme to include a magic eight ball. It is rare that teams even score 8 goals let alone to let it happen on this day in Buffalo Sabres history multiple times.
First off, the Buffalo Sabres have played 18 games on January 15th in the 43 January’s that the team has operated under. They have a franchise record of 9-7-2 all time.
One month before I was born in 1982 – the Buffalo Sabres scored 8 goals in a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs to beat them 8-2. The Sabres had one player get a hat trick in that game, and his name was Yvon Lambert.
Lambert was originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens and won 4 Stanley Cups before coming to the Buffalo Sabres. I personally want to thank Mr. Lambert for his efforts in trashing the Maple Leafs on this day.
Fast forward ten years and the number eight creeps up again, this time in a tie. Now when I mention who the Buffalo Sabres tied with, you will think there is no way that the trap would allow this, but in 1992 the Sabres skated with the New Jersey Devils on January 15th and the game ended like a bad chess match in one of those ties that used to exist in hockey. No, they didn’t combine for eight goals, the final score was 8-8. That game set the record for the highest scoring tie in franchise history.
Can the magic number 8 help the Buffalo Sabres in beating the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight at the Air Canada Centre?
