The Buffalo Sabres close out the month of January with six games – three this week and three next week. Seems like the month just started and hear we are already talking about the month coming to a close.
Two home games this week, and the first against the Carolina Hurricanes after the previous attempt at the Hurricanes coming to Buffalo was cancelled due to a blizzard.
Tuesday January 21, 2014 vs Florida Panthers
The third of fourth meetings between the two bottom teams of the Eastern Conference. The Buffalo Sabres are 1-0-1 against the Panthers this year so far, getting three of a possible four points. The loss between the two teams coming in the shootout. The Sabres will close out the season series on March 7th with a visit to Sunrise, Florida. With a ten point lead on the Sabres in the standings – if Florida wanted to nose dive and get the best chance at the first pick, they are within reach.
Thursday January 23, 2014 vs Carolina Hurricanes
The first of three meetings between the two teams. While this should be the second, the first game in the series was cancelled due to the blizzard of 14 that made it near impossible to travel through Buffalo – and the league has scheduled the game as the first game back from the Olympic break for both teams. Carolina finds themselves between a Buffalo rock and a Sabres hard place – not bad enough to pick high in the draft, but bad enough to be outside of the playoff picture. Maybe Darcy Regier could be hired in Carolina?
Saturday January 25, 2014 @ Columbus Blue Jackets
Columbus finds themselves in a playoff picture this year, something the franchise has only realized just once in their existence, holder of the final wild card playoff spot. This marks the third and final time the team plays closing out the season series, and the first between the two teams with Cbus as part of the Eastern Conference. Buffalo has not faired well against the Blue Jackets all year, going 0-1-1 and being outscored 8-4. The most recent being Saturday’s loss in the shootout at the First Niagara Center.
I am looking at the Buffalo Sabres getting three points this week. I think they are going to best the Florida Panthers – while taking one of their other two games to additional time, but falling in the overtime period or shootout.
