This Day In Buffalo Sabres History January 21

Today marks the 19th time in franchise history the Buffalo Sabres lace up the skates for a game day.  All total they are 6-8-4 on this day in history. The Sabres will host the Florida Panthers tonight.

Nathan Gerbe highlights today’s history piece by setting a franchise record for fastest two goals scored by one player.  In 2011 the former Sabres forward scored two goals in five seconds against the New York Islanders. Nathan Gerbe was the 142 overall pick in the 2005 draft and is now with the Carolina Hurricanes after being bought out by the Buffalo Sabres this past off season.

Watch the former Buffalo Sabres forward net the two goals below – don’t blink, you may miss the second goal.

Reaching back 33 years – on January 21, 1981 the Buffalo Sabres earn their 400th win in franchise history, defeating the Quebec Nordiques 6-5. The end of the 1980-1981 season saw the franchise play 872 regular season games – winning 418 times in that span.  Buffalo now has 1,570 wins as a franchise.

Christian Ehrhoff could make history tonight. His next point will be career point number 300 – and he will only be the 25th active defenseman to reach that mark. Leading the list is Sergei Gonchar for the Dallas Stars.

The Panthers have been playing better as of late – can the Sabres add to their total franchise wins tonight? Can anyone score faster than Nathan Gerbe? How high in the top 25 can Ehrhoff go?
