Report: Buffalo Sabres to Trade Matt Moulson

It’s expected to be a very busy trade deadline for the rebuilding Buffalo Sabres who look to add pieces for their future, and today the second rumour regarding the club’s intentions came out. According to Bob McKenzine of TSN, the Buffalo Sabres will almost certainly trade Matt Moulson by the deadline.

McKenzie also said not to rule out Tim Murray’s former team as an option for Matt Moulson.

Acquiring Matt Moulson was one of the last moves Darcy Regier made before the axe fell on him, and it appears the new guy in town wants to

rid all memory of the former boss. Moulson was acquired when the Sabres sent Thomas Vanek to the New York Islanders earlier this season, and while the Sabres had hopes of Moulson sticking around, however, if they can flip him for a nice prospect then it still could be considered a win.

In his 35 games since becoming a Sabre, Moulson has racked up 9 goals, 12 assists for 21 points that is good enough for the 3rd in Sabres scoring. Moulson has been playing primarily on the top line and has become the resident “sniper” and one of the few goal scorers the Sabres have.

Matt Moulson may be able to net the Buffalo Sabres the best return amongst their 3 upcoming free agents who are up for “sale” this season. Is letting their top line goal scorer go for the future worth it when he’s expressed interest in resigning?

What do you think of the Buffalo Sabres getting ready to get rid of Matt Moulson?

CC what is Mckenzie smoking? A 2nd or a prospect for Moulson? Guy can easily land us a 1st. What are your thoughts? If all we are gonna get is a mid level prospect or a 2nd round draft choice. I’d throw the bank book at him and give him whatever he wants. Guy should easily land us a top prospect. Look what Calgary almost got from the Bruins for Iggy. Moulson better then Iggy and he should only get a 2nd or a prospect. Mckenzie doesn’t have any idea what he’s talking about IMO.

    • Vic Soga

We should try to keep M & M’s. Miller, Moulson, Myers as your base, it wouldn’t surprise me Murray trades for 2 nd round pick and Nolan for Moulson. S/B Moulson and Weber or McNabb for 1st, Stoll.

      • Vic Soga

McKenzie was seen partying with Rob Ford at Burger King.

        • JHizzle75

          Well done,sir. Well done. Lol

      • Jes

U mean Nolan’s son? If u do I would hate to see that. Imagine the favouritism he’d show him. I am counting the days until weber is out a sabres uniform. That will be TE only leverage sabres will have in resigning Ott IMO. Miller’s got to go.

        • Vic Soga

Weber is -25 and -5 in the last five games. Doesn’t matter who he plays with. Ott has to realize that stat. Yes I mean Jordan Nolan. Miller to St. Louis for 1st and Stewart? Miller and Tallinder to Anaheim for 1st, 2nd and goalie Andersen and prospect?

          • Jes

I’m going to say hell no to Nolan. Ya webers horrible I’m just saying that if you want to resign Ott then I don’t think we trade him. I don’t like Andersen. His stats are inflated on a very good team. More then half his opponents were non playoff teams. So ya he’s overrated. I’d rather go after Gibson.

          • JHizzle75

A 1st AND Stewart? If Miller agrees to sign there past this season then yes, but as a rental I think it would be one or the other.

    • JHizzle75

Moulson is better than Iginla? I think you’ve been hanging out with Bob Mckenzie…lol. I’m assuming you mean at the time of the trade Iggy and not overall ? I’m pretty sure Iginla will be in the HHOF when his career is done.

      • Jes

Moulson is far greater then Iggy as of today. I’m not talking about the past guy. Obviously including the past Iggy’s waaaaay better, but right now? Moulson takes the cake. Moulson is basically a smaller version of Iggy. Moulson will continue to get 30+ goals a year for awhile. Iggy’s 30 goal day are well behind him.

        • JHizzle75

Ha ha I know what you meant, Jes, just wanted to get that McKenzie joke in there…. Lol

    • wolfdoctor

I totally agree Jes. A 2nd round pick? Does McKenzie know that only 1 of 4 second round picks ever play as many as 100 NHL games in their careers? As you said, if that is all that is offered, I’d do everything to sign him.

      • Luc

Sabres already have LA’s 2nd round pick(2014, 2015) i.e- Regehr trade. Kings would trade Toronto’s 2nd round pick(conditional- either 2014 or 2015). So most likely a little better overall pick.

    • Caitlin Campbell

oh I agree, Moulson should be able to net us a nice promising prospect for any team looking for depth for a Cup Run

    • Luc

Moulson will be a rental; unless he was signed to a lengthy contract, I don’t see him getting traded for a first, but i could be wrong. A 1st round pick is too much for him. Sabres are going to want to move him, and get something for him before the deadline, as he will most likely hit free agency..

  • Cory Buck

I would say it depends on the ‘expressed interest’ part. He could just be keeping an open mind. If he signs like now, then that’s great because I like Moulson, but I don’t think that happens and the Sabres can’t risk losing a shot at more assets right now.

    • Caitlin Campbell

true, he’s expressed interest but until pen hits papers that means very little

  • Thomas Eric

Okay so it’s to start thinking about trading these guys for 2015 first rounders and 2016 first rounders we have probably 2 this year but I rather have more next year and then if we don’t get 1st package them all up for mcdavid

    • Dano

Im trying to decipher what you wrote. If I get it wrong, I apologize before hand.

“Okay so it’s to start thinking about trading these guys for 2015 first rounders and 2016 first rounders”

Are you saying its time to start trading guys for NEXT julys draft in the summer of 2015 and the draft after that?

“we have probably 2 this year but I rather have more next year”

The Sabres have their first rounder plus whatever else they can pull in. The Islanders might give up their first for 2014 from the Vanek trade so I would be inclined to agree with you in the Sabres having 2 first rounders.

“if we don’t get 1st package them all up for mcdavid”

Do you mean to trade away all their picks in 2015 to whomever wins the lottery to try and gain the first overall pick? *IF* McDavid is worth THAT much, WHY would a team take a package deal instead of McDavid? *IF* McDavid is HALF of what people tout or prospect about him, NOBODY would give up the opportunity of having the kid for any kind of bulk-package deal.

      • Thomas Eric

Sorry my iPad messed up the typing I think we should try for picks in the other drafts because out of the top 5 guys this year I don’t really see a game changer yes there maybe good players but I think it’s time buffalo finds the key future guy. I really think if we package the right deal we could land him I think we are in good hands with Murray tho don’t think we’re gonna have the same issues we had with Darcy

  • David Clark

If Moulson is traded to Los Angeles and the return package doesn’t include Tyler Toffoli, then I’m going to grow quickly suspicious of Tim Murray until he can show a better return in a separate trade. Moulson is one of the Top 3 sought after players for this year’s deadline and Murray has made clear insinuations he is trying to turn things around in 3 years (vs. 5). To me, that indicates that he wants young players with big upside and whom are just about ready to begin their NHL careers… not players just coming out of Junior hockey and drafted in the 1st or 2nd round (more often than not, players outside of the Top 3-5 in the NHL are 2-3 years, at best, from really beginning to contribute in the NHL – if you even pick the right guy). This team needs more goal-scoring, NHL-ready talent… if Moulson moves, they need to replace his offense with a Toffoli or similar high-end prospect. On another note, when does McKenzie believe the Sabres are going to get this 2nd round pick from Los Angeles? The Sabres already have their 2nd round picks in 2014 and 2015 from the Robyn Regehr trade.

    • Caitlin Campbell

I think Moulson could easily net a Toffoli/prospect type of player for sure. As far as McKenzie I’m not sure but good point

    • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

Toffoli and a pick, at least, or nothing!!!!!!!!!

    • Luc

The Kings don’t have enough cap space for that, unless the Sabres retain some salary. I see it Trevor Lewis and a 2nd(Toronto’s) for Moulson.

      • David Clark

Yes they do… the team doesn’t have to fit his entire salary for the season, only what is remaining. Since he was making a little over $3 million, it will be about $1 million (if not less) that the Kings would have to fit into their remaining cap space.

        • David Clark

How about this trade between Buffalo and Los Angeles…
Moulson, Ott and Kings’ 2nd round pick in 2015 (previously acquired in Regehr trade) for Dustin Brown, Tyler Toffoli and Kings’ 1st round pick in 2015
Brown has been a huge disappointment this season for Kings after they gave him $5+ million per year contract… his production clearly doesn’t warrant that pay grade this season. He would have significant value to the Sabres as a local product and Olympic team member. Toffoli would help replenish the offense lost by parting with Moulson. Ott for Brown is about even, based on their style of play and production this season… and the Sabres taking on the risk of the larger contract between the two. Moulson’s veteran presence and proven consistency as an NHL goal scorer warrants Toffoli and the upgrade in draft pick.

  • bigolbig

Sabres need to trade Moulson and Miller, stay in the basement for the rest of this year and next so they can draft a couple of future star forwards. That’s how teams like CHI and PIT are built. Sabres already have a solid D crew and a few G prospects coming up so add a Reinhart and a McDavid and they’re good to go.

    • Caitlin Campbell

They’re set at D and between the pipes for the future, now it’s just the forwards. Hey if we can land roughly 4 solid players between this year and next years draft I’m game.

  • davidmuscalo

I thought the nonsense would end when Regier was fired. Now I see we watching the same movie; only the cast has changed. WHAT A REVOLTIN’ DEVELOPMENT THIS IS!

    • Caitlin Campbell

Everything I’ve heard from Murray leads me to believe he wants most memories of Regier gone. Moulson was a great trade by Regier but Murray wants to flip him, Grigorenko was a Regier draft pick and Murray isn’t impressed. Seems like Murray is wanting to go his own way

      • davidmuscalo

I have no problem with Murray going “his own way”, but doesn’t his way seem to dovetail quite nicely with Regiers. To wit: Stripping the team of its talent, and replacing it with draft picks and prospects.

    • bullwinkle88

The Life Of Reilly – William Bendix! I’d recognize that quote anywhere!

      • davidmuscalo

My favorite sitcom of all time!

        • bullwinkle88

Let’s see if I can remember the cast…Marjorie Reynolds as his wife, Eugene Sanders as his daughter and Wesley Morgan as his son. Tom D’Andrea as his neighbor…was Joan Blondell Tom’s wife?

You must be as old as I! I’m 68…not many people remember those old shows.

          • davidmuscalo

I think Jane Wyatt was his wife and Babs was Lauren Chapin.

Also, I’ve got two years on you – I am 70.

          • bullwinkle88

I know for sure Eugene Sanders was “Babs” his daughter. That’s stuck in my head along with Wesley Morgan.

Hold on, I’ll look it up…
I was close…it’s Lugene Sanders as his daughter and Gloria Blondell as Tom’s wife, not Joan.

Marjorie Reynolds as his wife Peggy. I’m surprised my old brain still works that well!

          • davidmuscalo

You are right! Jane Wyatt and Lauren Chapin were in Father Knows Best with Robert Young.
