Buffalo Sabres PreGame Skate #49: Carolina Hurricanes

Game number 49 – which should be game number fifty, with the Carolina Hurricanes (20-19-9) for the first time this season, when it should be the second.  Got that under control?  Ok – Thanks to the polar vortex that swept through Buffalo cancelling the game on January 7th the Buffalo Sabres (13-28-7) will be hosting Carolina for the first time this season.

The fight for the bottom of the league and the best chance at the first overall pick still lies largely with the Buffalo Sabres, Edmonton Oilers, and Calgary Flames.  The Carolina Hurricanes are not too far from the lottery themselves with just 49 points; they only sit one place better than the New York Islanders for the worst record in the Metropolitan Division.  Not helping the team lately has been the juggling of their schedule, because of league rules and snowstorms cancelling causing the rescheduling two of their games.

Normally when two teams meet – the end of the streak discussion is had when both teams are on a winning streak with a head on collision.  The two teams playing chicken tonight are both limping after losing one in regulation.

The Sabres have not won a game since the 12th of January.  Despite getting points in some of their games outside of the last outing, the Buffalo Sabres are on a four game skid.  While that does great for the overall outcome of trying to secure the first overall pick in the draft – it doesn’t really give you the ability to boost player trade value and build any sort of consistency in your locker room.

The Sabres and Hurricanes have a lot in common, and that is the high number of one goal games they have played.  For the Hurricanes however, they have points in 24 of their 27 one goal games.

While both teams are riding losses into the contest tonight – there are bright spots on both teams, Hurricanes forward Alexander Semin has four goals in his past three games. Center Eric Staal has one goal and four assists during a three-game point streak. … Sabres forward Drew Stafford has three goals and one assist in his past two games.

Game time tonight is 7PM.
