Buffalo Sabres – Columbus Blue Jackets: Fan Picks!

Things are getting interesting around Sabre Noise, everyone!

With a win Thursday night, wolfdoctor becomes the first person to win bragging rights three times in our friendly fan picks competition.  I’d love to tell you whether wolfie is in the overall lead, but as of right now a busy schedule and a nagging back injury have kept me away from a computer for long stretches at a time.  I still have two games to tally up before I will have current points standings, but check back in with me tonight – my back is feeling good, so maybe I will have a complete picture to share with you all before game time!

Trust me, though: the free t-shirt that I am willing to hand out to the eventual winner is still up for grabs!  Even if you haven’t gotten involved in the fun yet, there are lots of points up for grabs every night, so no one is comfortable yet.  I have actually beefed up the nightly scoring, so there’s more points than ever tonight, so let’s get started!

This is the third and final meeting between the Buffalo Sabres and the Columbus Blue Jackets, and if you have been attention lately, these two teams are headed in completely opposite directions.  The Blue Jackets have won eight straight games, while the Sabres have dropped five in a row.  The worst part about the Sabres’ current losing streak is they have finally developed some consistency on offense, having scored 3 goals in each and every one of those five consecutive losses.

The last time these two teams played, the Blue Jackets won 4-3 in a shootout.  Perhaps the Sabres can flip the script tonight?  We’ll see.

Questions to consider:

1. I’m setting tonight’s over/under at 6.5.  Will the two teams combine to score more, or less?

2. Pick any five players (mix and match from each team).  I’ll give you 10 points if one of your players scores the first goal, and 5 points for any player who scores in the game.  (Note: you will only get 10 for first goal, not 10+5, and a player who scores twice only gets 5 points, since it’s not points per goal).

3. Predict how many shots on goal the Sabres take tonight.  +7 points for closest pick, +5 for second closest.

4. Final score, and who wins?  +4 for picking winning team, +5 for being closest to final combined score.

5. Steve Ott has eight points in his last 11 games against Columbus.  Linus Omark has six points in five career games against the team.  Tyler Ennis eight points in his last 8 games, and six points in four career games against Columbus.  Finally, Cody Hodgson has earned points in five of the last six games he has played since coming off IR.  Of these four, who gets the most, and second-most, points tonight?    +6 for picking who gets the most; +4 for picking who gets the second-most, and +11 for picking BOTH.

Got all of that?  Let’s get started!

    - Ennis gets the most points, followed by (or tied with) Steve Ott

    Whew!

    • JHizzle75

So what happens if all 3 players have the same total points? Just a wash?

      • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

        Yes.

      • Labbatt

I tried, but was having login issues

    • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

+4 for picking Hodgson (he had the most points, but you picked him for second), and I believe that’s it. I’ll double check, but that is what I see right now.

  • wolfdoctor

Off to plowing! No seat for me :(

    • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

Like you said, I’m trying to provide some more points to offset the “Lightning strikes” effect if you pick the first goal scorer. If this works, I’ll stick with it (with slight game-to-game variations).

      • Dano

You could make a rotating ‘ wildcard ‘ category : Shots on net, penalty minutes for the whole team , total hits, blocked shots.. theres a lot of them ;)

    • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

+4 for over; +5 for CoHo scoring; +7 for picking CoHo to score most points = +16.

  • Kevin

    1.Under

      • Dano

Thats the highest score Ive seen in my 3 attempts at this game. Kudos Darius!

        • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

          Yep, current record-holder!

    • wolfdoctor

      Well done.

  • JHizzle75

For starters , Tim’s pre game skate has Omark as a healthy scratch. I see no one has picked him so far, so the point is probably moot, but just so ya know!
    1. Over
    2. Umberger, Tropp, Hodgson , Ennis, Varone
    3. 35 shots
    4. Sabres win 5-3
5, CoHo with the most, then Ennis

    • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

Thanks – I didn’t see him in the Sabres press notes. But then again, I doubt I looked that hard!

    • Dano

Damn! All but the shot count!

    • JHizzle75

      Same with the Jackets. Lol

      • Dano

        4th lines can produce! ;) .

    • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

That takes care of the wildcard pick!

    • Dano

2 Short handed goals! Keep taking penalties!!!! They are working out! :D

      • JHizzle75

We can actually get the puck out of our own end when we’re short-handed…I need an offensive explosion in the 3rd to hit my over and shot total predictions !

        • Dano

I bid ‘ over ‘ and 29 shots. They have like 14 or 15 after 2 periods. Same boat as you.

  • JHizzle75

Congrats to Ehrhoff on his 300 th point!
Some great work by Foligno on the PK

  • Caitlin Campbell

    The offence gave the D a 2-goal lead… don’t blow it D you have 2 chances!

  • Andrew

    That empty netter ruined EVERYTHING

Good thing that no points were set for the over under…no points for any of us!

    • Dano

Sad face for both! I had CoHo and the over! :( :(

    • JHizzle75

Ha ha I never noticed that ! What are you doing about that , Rich?

      • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

Over under was 6.5 – 6 or under, 7 or over. I’m confused.

        • Caitlin Campbell

they mean you didn’t say how many points if you get the over/under correct

          • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

I see that now – Dano was specific, so I’ll give 4 points because that is what I usually do! Sucks for me . . .

          • Caitlin Campbell

            lol just trying to help

        • JHizzle75

          What is “I’m confused.”
I’ll take ‘ Frequently Uttered By Richard Spalding” for 400 please, Alex….

          • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

            You bastard . . . ! lol I have a catch phrase now!!!

          • JHizzle75

Ha ha ha ! Sorry, Rich…couldn’t resist that one ;)

    • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

I set the over/under at 6.5. What are you talking about?

      • Dano

You didnt specify how many points the over/under was worth. do you have a standard/consistant value for it?

        • http://SabreNoise.com/ Richard Spalding

Oh, I see. Eh, I usually go 4 points, so I’ll stick with that, and you know I’m not cheating because I didn’t win it!!! lol
