This season has certainly been a rough one, and while it’s great to finish 30th and have a chance at the first overall pick, it’s not
always easy to watch the product responsible for the 30th ranked team. So today as the Buffalo Sabres get ready to take on the hottest team in the NHL, we’re going reminisce about the last “glory days” for the Buffalo Sabres. Today’s poll comes from one of my facebook groups again, and the question they want to know is- what is your favourite moment from the 2006-2007 Buffalo Sabres?
I believe that I attended my first ever Sabres game during the 2006-2007 season, and I actually got into a fight with a woman in front of me over Maxim Afinogenov. Afinogenov made a poor play resulting in a goal against and Lindy Ruff decided to bench him for a while after that play, I mentioned to my dad that Afinogenov made a poor play and was benched but the woman in front would have none of it.
In all seriousness, this was one of the first years I fell in love with the Buffalo Sabres. Seeing the skill of Daniel Briere, Chris Drury and Ryan Miller was amazing and a big change from being a Leafs fan during that time.
2006-2007 was such a great year, and many fans thought the Sabres had a legitament chance of bringing home Lord Stanley’s Cup. Unfortunately, it was all for not when they lost to the Ottawa Senators in the Conference Finals, but it gave fans hope in the team after back-to-back Conference Finals.
The Sabres were set to become a dynasty at that point. Briere and Drury led the offence, while Thomas Vanek was still emerging. Brian Campbell was on the blue line, while Ryan Miller manned the pipes. Unfortunately, Darcy Regier let the dynasty slip right through his fingers and the Sabres have not been within a sniff of the Conference Finals since.
Despite the team on the ice today lacking the skills to do what the 2006-2007 team was able to do, we’re going to think positive as we look back at some of the best moments from 2006-2007. Vote for your favourite moment- I will probably forget some- and then let’s talk about the Sabres glory days in the comments.
Since today is a special poll, you’re all allowed to choose 2 answers! Choose wisely!
