This Day In Buffalo Sabres History

Today we’re taking y’all back to 1991 when the blue and gold actually went on long winning streaks and played at the old Aud. If you’re game take a journey back in time with us to January 27th, 1991.

If today’s Buffalo Sabres went on a 8 game winning streak I’m sure fans would either be planning the Stanley Cup parade

or burning down the arena for ruining their shot at the first overall pick. However, that’s exactly what the 1991 Buffalo Sabres did. The Sabres would win 8 straight home games at the Aud before a 5-4 loss to the Calgary Flames on January 27th.

Every winning streak has to come to an end at some point. Just ask the Columbus Blue Jackets who were served some humble pie by the Sabres on the weekend.

Much like the Blue Jackets, and Sabres affair this weekend, the Buffalo Sabres were the hot team in 1990-1991 when their streak was snapped by the Calgary Flames.

Fans had been spoiled with 8 straight wins at home that one loss wasn’t a big deal for most that night, it was what followed their first home loss that left a bitter taste in the fans mouths.

Following the loss on January 27th, 1991 the Buffalo Sabres would not win another game at the Aud until March 17th, a span of 12 games. During that 12 game stretch the Buffalo Sabres went 0-7-5, quite a change from a team that couldn’t help, but win at home.

Both teams had very successful seasons and went onward into the playoffs, but both fell short of winning.
