January 3 Stars: Second Star; Zemgus Girgensons

Earlier today we showed you guys who was voted as the Buffalo Sabres third star for January, later on we’ll be revealing the first star of the month, but as you can tell from the title above, our second star is going to Zemgus Girgensons.

Zemgus Girgensons and Cody Hodgson actually finished tied in our rankings with 9 points, both receiving 2 first star

nominations and one of each a second and third star nomination. However, since everyone loves Girgensons and he scored the game winner the other night we decided to give him the nod.

The funny thing about Girgensons is despite his strong play on the top line he went 15 games without scoring a goal. He was battling hard and looked good on the top line alongside Matt Moulson and Tyler Ennis but just couldn’t get the job done.

Zemgus Girgensons is one of the few young players that have been able to stick on the Buffalo Sabres roster right from the start. Say what you want about the chemistry between him and Ted Nolan, but Girgensons has earned his ice time this season. He’s quickly become a fan favourite and has fans excited for the future of the Sabres.

Oddly enough Girgensons put up just 2 points in the month of January and they both came on Thursday night when he netted the game winner and added an assist. Yet we still love him?

Although he didn’t score a lot of goals, he tied the NHL record with 13 hits in a single game earlier this month. He was also named to the Latvian Olympic team at the beginning of the month. Ties NHL record, scores first game winning goal and gets named to Latvia’s Olympic team, not a horrible month for a 19 year old rookie.

Here are some highlights of Zemgus Girgensons over the last month that led to him being named our second star.

He didn’t score in this next one but he still worked hard to earn a penalty shot.

Stay tuned for our first star from January.
