Report: Ryan Miller And Steve Ott Traded To St. Louis

Tonight I was ready to watch Ryan Miller suit up and play his final home game wearing blue and gold for the Buffalo Sabres, however, Tim Murray had other plans for my night. Roughly 15-20 minutes before puck drop news broke that both Ryan Miller and Steve Ott were late scratches for tonight’s game. That news meant one of two things; either a deal was in place or Murray wanted to protect two of his biggest assets.

The Sabres have dealt Ryan Miller and Steve Ott both to St. Louis for Ty Rattie, however, the Blues were not willing to part

ways with their young prospect and have sent Buffalo other parts. Miller and Ott have both found a new home in St. Louis in exchange for Jaroslav Halak, Chris Stewart, prospect William Carrier, a first round pick in 2015 and a third round in 2016.

Blues acquire Ryan Miller and Steve Ott for Jaroslav Halak, Chris Stewart, William Carrier, a 1st-rounder in ’15 and a 3rd-round pick in ’16

With the trade deadline just a few days away, Tim Murray may have stolen the show with this early blockbuster deal which helps the Buffalo Sabres with their rebuild and makes the St. Louis Blues instant contenders. Steve Ott is now the third captain to be traded from the Sabres following Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek.

It’s a shocking time for many fans in Buffalo right now as the Buffalo Sabres have dealt both Steve Ott and former franchise goaltender Ryan Miller ahead of Wednesday’s trade deadline. One thing is for sure, Tim Murray came into town with a game plan for the rebuild and has taken the first step towards rebuilding the Buffalo Sabres. Tim Murray means business!

I’m not happy with the Carrier pickup. I believe we could’ve easily got Rattie in a deal involving both Ott and Miller. Whatever though.

Agreed. Picks for the future mean we won’t see results from the players picked for even longer.

      • Jes

I can almost guarantee anyone Regier would’ve gotten much more. With how good the Blues will be those picks are basically a 2nd rounder and a 4th rounder. Halak was a good pickup. Hearing that the Sabres will be sending Stewart towards Ottawa now. At least that’s the rumor I’ve heard from the commentators on this Sharks network.

Hockey’sFuture rates Carrier as a 7.0 D, the same as Daniel Catenacci. I would give him about a 25-50% chance of him ever playing in the NHL. Rattie is rated as a 7.5 B, which is substantially better (especially the B part). IMO, he will play for many years in the NHL.

      • Jes

Yup I think both Catenacci and Carrier will be AHLers for life types.

  • wolfdoctor

Disappointed. Thought we could have gotten more. St. Louis won this trade.

    • Jes

      By a landslide.

I find myself more upset that Ott was traded. If Moulson goes, I will be quite angry. They need to make him part of this rebuild.

    • Jes

I think Moulson get’s dealt IMO. Teams are lining up for his services.

      • [email protected]

As much as I think you are right, I still don’t want to see him go. He is a great player when he gets paired up with someone of equal or greater talent.

        • davidmuscalo

I agree but with the idiot Murray running or should I say ruining things anything is possible especially if it’s bad for the team.

  • Denis MacDougall

I was a Leaf fan and became totalled disgusted with the trades and management of that team after the F. Mahovlich trade. The Leafs have never been the same since. Lost interest until the Sabres entered the league and have been a Sabres fan ever since. Disappointed with this development and I am seriously rethinking my longstanding allegiance to this team. There’s likely more to come with Myers being mentioned as a potential trade.Miller I might get but Ott the team leader. BS!

    • wolfdoctor

I was a big Leaf fan in the 50s and 60s. I was devastated when the Big M was traded.

  • qwicwted

I like a part of the trade – getting Stewart but if Jes is right and Murray is just going to trade him to Ottawa for draft picks than I’m not really impressed with Murray. I think Darcy would have gotten more packaging Miller and Ott, but it seems Murray wants the draft picks – which means we’re in for a long haul.

    • Dano

      “Murray wants the draft picks”

Thats what everyone wanted. MANY people were stating the only way to rebuild was through the draft.. Now Murray is taking that route and people are saying hes coming up short.

At least he grabbed Stew ;) .

The Goalie market right now isnt to big. Not many buyers that will fit Millers list with his limited movement clause.

      • Jes

People wanted us to build through the draft with our picks. That’s why we wanted to tank. We wanted top prospects in return for Miller and Ott and honestly we really didn’t get that. Carrier isn’t a top prospect IMO. Hopefully that 2015 first ends up turning into a stud. 3rd won’t be anything IMO.

  • lee Munn

I semi-fine with these moves, except would have much rather had Allan then Halak. Allan is coming into being a full time goalie & still a RFA. but in 8 weeks Halak is a UFA & will say goodbye Buffalo (Then all we got was last years #57 draft/’15 #29 draft & ’16 #90 + Stewart.) I would say St Louis wins this unless we re-sign Ott next year. Lets keep our fingers crossed!!

  • Dano

Heard from a few locals that calls are coming in for Myers now.

    • Jes

I heard Ehrhoff. Also heard Sabres are gonna try and flip Stewart to Ottawa. Apparently wants him real bad.

      • Dano

I like the thought of having Stewart around. He can scrap kinda like McCormic ( whom might not be back ) and he does put the puck in the net better then a Gaustad, Mair or McCormic type player.

If Stewart is dealt, so be it. It looks like everyone outside of Gus is ‘ available ‘ right now. The problem though : Whats left to rebuild with outside of draft picks/prospects and having NOWHERE for those players to develop thats worthy of mentioning?

Methinks Ott might be back this summer ;) .

        • Jes

Ya I also think Ott will be back in the summer. I think we will sign Callahan in the offseason also.

          • Dano

I like Ott. Cally? Im not hot nor cold for the guy.

Im wondering about whos going to be the future netminder. Im sure Enroth could do it.. successfully or not is questionable. Hackett? I saw him play the other week at FNC against Detroits farm team ( Griffins ). Hackett is NOT an NHL worthy tender right now. Halak is a UFA at the end of this year.. maybe sign him?

What concerns me the most is not having the right kind of Veterans around, a few guys with the right mindset to help the kids along.

          • Jes

I honestly thought Hackett would’ve been better. Lieuwen’s been outplaying him IMO. Regier should’ve added whatever to the Pominville trade to get Keumpher from Minny instead.

I think we should resign Halak, but would he want to resign with us? I wouldn’t mind flipping him in a deal that involves a Coyle type of a young talent.

Stewart I’d flip just because I don’t think he will ever reach the performance level he was at when he was playing with the Avalanche. Cost me a hockey pool;) Lol.

  • Jes

Hey CC is it also true that we got another first rounder in this years draft from St. Louis if they make the conference finals or resign Miller. Heard Pierre LeBrun talking about it on TSN that Sabres probably will end up with picks in this draft?

    • Caitlin Campbell

That is correct Jes. If Blues make Conference finals or re-sign Miller the 3rd rounder in 2016 becomes a first in 2014

  • davidmuscalo

St. Louis found an new place to dump their garbage; it’s called Buffalo!
