The Buffalo Sabres held a third-period lead on the road against the Carolina Hurricanes, but could not hold on for the win. Here are the best 3 Sabres of the game, in my opinion…
This one was a toss-up. I thought Cory Conacher provided a very energetic effort, and had an assist. Drew Stafford continued his stellar and consistent play, adding a goal. Tyler Myers and Nick Deslauriers had solid games. I am going with D’Agostini with this pick, because his bursts of speed were on display all night, and he was the most visible player not on Buffalo’s top line. Too bad it did not result in any goals.
2. Tyler Ennis
Ennis has quietly had one of the best seasons of any current Sabre. He leads everyone on the roster in goals, and is now tied with Cody Hodgson for the most points. It makes you wonder what he could do if he had a pair of upper-echelon players skating with him, then again, we wondered that about Thomas Vanek for a long time.
Ennis single-handedly helped generate most of Buffalo’s scoring chances tonight, and scored the first goal of the game on a penalty shot.
This was an easy choice. The Buffalo Sabres gave up 55 shots in this game, and somehow, Neuvirth only allowed 3 goals. This performance comes on the heels of a 42 save effort in his previous appearance. The guy stood on his head all night.
A good number of other NHL goalies would have crumbled under the pressure Neuvirth faced tonight, and I have to give major kudos to him for keeping the Sabres in this game for as long as he did. A puck deflecting off Mike Weber‘s skate tied the game, and there was nothing Neuvirth could have done about it. Meanwhile, Ryan Miller picked up a victory facing only 22 shots tonight.
