This Day In Buffalo Sabres History: March 15

Can we please be done with winter?  Sure it means the end of the hockey season for the Buffalo Sabres; and for many fans the end can’t come fast enough – for me this year – I have been numbed to the losing and just enjoy watching hockey.

This will be the 20th game that the Sabres play on March 15th, and the organization is 7-8-4 all time.  A win today against the New York Islanders brings the team to .500 on the day.  Only problem is, the best way for the Buffalo Sabres to hold on to the top pick in this draft is to give two points to the New York Islanders, unless they think the Islanders wont defer the pick and Buffalo will get this year’s high end draft picks.

Buffalo Sabres vs New York Islanders March 15, 1999

This is not the first time the Sabres have played the New York Islanders on March 15.  In 1999 Miroslav Satan scored two goals against the Islanders.  Dwayne Roloson turns aside 23 shots of the 24 taken against him as the Buffalo Sabres defeat the New York Islanders.

It seems like a hit or miss with the New York Islanders on which team is going to win – and with nothing but pride on the line tonight – who skates away victorious.  So far the Buffalo Sabres have already won in the Thomas Vanek trade.

Buffalo Sabres vs Philadelphia Flyers March 15, 1997

Two years previous to the win over the Islanders – which just seems like another normal victory in a long chain of victories throughout the years.  This opponent was the Philadelphia Flyers, and nothing pleases me more to see the Flyers lose.

With goal scorers from six different members of the Sabres, including two goals from Brian Holzinger – the Sabres beat the Flyers 7-5, picking up the 1,000th victory in Buffalo Sabres history.

Will more history be made today, or will we just see another bad hockey game between two bad hockey teams struggling to find their identity and future.
