The Buffalo Sabres didn’t anticipate this year to be a record setting season, and most people wouldn’t expect them to shatter any team record. Odds are however the 20013-2014 Buffalo Sabres will go down in the history of the team as the worst team to wear blue and gold (bad red and black) ever.
The Buffalo Sabres have a hard time scoring goals, and winning games. That just naturally happens when your team trades away all it’s star players – and relies on a team full of third and fourth line players as they struggle to purge the roster and rebuild an organization in shambles.
This was not the first year that the team struggled to put the puck in the net. The record for fewest goals in a single season by the team was set by the 2002-2003 Buffalo Sabres. That edition of the Sabres won 27 games – more than this team, but only managed to score 190 goals (only counting full seasons).
With just eight games remaining on the schedule, the Sabres need forty-nine goals to surpass that record. Odds are, they will not reach that threshold.
Goal scoring aside, the Sabres have only managed 20 wins on the season. The fewest games won by any Buffalo Sabres team was the inaugural season, in which the 1970-1971 Buffalo Sabres failed to make the playoffs winning just 24 games. The 2013-2014 Buffalo Sabres will have to play at least .500 the remainder of the season if they hope to not win fewer games than the expansion franchise. (technically speaking this team is worse – the 70-71 team only played 78 games in their regular season).
Will these records stand – or will the Buffalo Sabres of 2014-2015 be even worse when it comes to putting up goals on the scoreboard and wins in the standings? Odds are they will be worse. It will be a surprise to many if they do better.
