NHL Draft 2014: Who Will Be Top Three?

The day of the 2014 NHL Draft has finally come. By the end of tonight, there will be a crop of 30 new NHLers. Some may see action when the season starts back up in October; others, it might take a little longer for them to seep into an NHL team, but they’ll get there eventually. By the time all’s said and done this weekend, the NHL Draft will see 210 players chosen from leagues and teams across the world added to the league roster.

This year, there’s no specific player that we can guarantee will be the top pick tonight. Unlike the year of Sidney Crosby, Steven Stamkos or John Tavares, there’s no clear-cut number one. Even hours before the top pick of the NHL Draft is announced, analysts still have no clear-cut consensus on who will go first.

Could it be Barrie Colts defenseman Aaron Ekblad?

Or perhaps Kingston Frontenacs center Sam Bennett?

What about Kootenay Ice center Sam Reinhart?

Maybe even Prince Albert Raiders center Leon Draisaitl?

Ekblad, Bennett, Reinhart and Draisaitl are said to be the top four prospects heading into tonight’s draft, but it’s still unclear at this point who the Florida Panthers will pick with their coveted first-overall selection — if they keep the pick at all, that is. There’s still a solid chance the Panthers may trade that top pick; it’d be history repeating itself, as the last time a #1 pick was traded was in 2003 — the Panthers traded that pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

With just about ten hours (or less, depending on when you’re reading this) to go until that first overall selection is announced, who do you think will be the top pick? How about the top three? Could an international player such Kasperi Kapanen or William Nylander sneak into that top three, knocking out one of the North American skaters? What about a goalie? Stranger things have happened…. you never know.

The poll below lists the top five North American skaters and top five international skaters. From that lot, which three do you think will be the top selections? (As it stands right now, the top three picks go to Florida, Buffalo and Edmonton.)
