NHL Draft 2014: Buffalo Sabres Select Brycen Martin

With their second selection in the third round of the NHL Draft, the Buffalo Sabres picked up defenseman Brycen Martin of the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos.

Martin, 18, is a Calgary native who has spent the past two seasons with the Broncos. This season, the defenseman had 37 points, including 31 assists, in 72 regular season games with Swift Current. He also had 42 penalty minutes on the year.

Prior to that, Martin had 19 points (2-17) and 32 penalty minutes in 67 games during the 2012-13 season. He also appeared in three games with Swift Current in the 2011-12 season.

The pick comes 13 spots after the Sabres picked up Swedish goaltender Jonas Johansson, who played last year with Brynas IF Gavle.

As it stands right now, Buffalo does not hold a pick in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL Draft, so Sabres fans can rest easy for a bit.

Of course, that could change at any time if the Sabres make a trade that provides them with a fourth-round pick. Even if they don’t, Buffalo could still make an important trade over the coming minutes, so keep your eyes peeled for more news as it comes up.

The Sabres hold the first picks in rounds five through seven of the NHL Draft, so they’ll pick #121, #151 and #181.
