Just when you thought it was safe to walk away from the computer, the Buffalo Sabres signed another free agent, adding Andrej Meszaro’s to the teams defensive corps.
Andrej Meszaros doesn’t come with a huge liability, its only a one year deal. It is another player however that comes from a playoff team – that contends year in and year out.
Meszaros comes to the Buffalo Sabres as a nine year veteran of the league, his last stop being the Boston Bruins of last season. Before that he played with the Philadelphia Flyers.
He was originally drafted by the Ottawa Senators.
What does this add – another veteran presence on the blue line, something that Tim Murray obviously sees the Buffalo Sabres as needing improvement in.
Why Andrej Meszaros and the slew of other defensive players selected today? Veteran leadership. Short term contracts that have gobbled up salary cap and got Tim Murray closer to the floor in one day after eliminating three major contracts – well that was top of the list of things to do.
Think about who your trusting your blue line too, Tyler Myers, Mike Weber, and a corps of guys that have no business running an NHL blue line on their own just yet. Sure Rasmus Ristolainen and Nikita Zadorov are on the cusp of regular NHL season action – ready to handle the physical rigors of the game.
Can they meet the psychological rigors of the National Hockey League? There is also the case in point that the Buffalo Sabres get pushed around a lot – all over the ice.
Andrej Meszaros is the type of player that will help change that culture.
I wasn’t counting on the Buffalo Sabres to make this deal; nor was I expecting it. Tim Murray has definitely cemented himself as a Buffalo Sabres hero. He made hockey moves that made sense – and he made this team better.
Welcome to the Buffalo Sabres Andrej Meszaros.
