Buffalo Sabres Daily Special Edition: NHL Free Agency

There are few really interesting days in the hockey world, and the Buffalo Sabres are set to take part in one today.

You have the roster freeze as the trade deadline approaches, the Stanley Cup Finals, the draft, and today – the free for all shopping spree that is NHL free agency.

Past their prime defenseman are going to be targeted by the Buffalo Sabres this free agent period.  [Die By The Blade.

The blue line is going to be a mess this year.  With Christian Ehrhoff gone your defensive leadership now falls on the shoulders of Tyler Myers and Mike Weber.

Tyler Myers has been six feet eight inches of hot mess in previous seasons, although he has been playing better as of late.  I don’t think he is right in the head to manage a blue line just yet.

Mike Weber took years to crack the lineup full time and it took scraping the bottom of the barrel to do it.  He wasn’t a defensive player of the year last year either.

No one is going to want to come here, unless no one else is willing to pay them, and Buffalo is going to overpay them.  The Buffalo Sabres have alot of image repair to do as well.   Remember talking about bringing Brooks Orpik here a few years ago?  Well you will likely getting an older more worn out version.

It is all about the veteran leadership at this point, keeping the kids from imploding on a long road trip, or getting them through the rough patches of the season.

The Buffalo Sabres don’t qualify Cory Conacher, making him a free agent.  [Raw Charge].

Conacher only had a nineteen game stint with the Buffalo Sabres, but it was a stint that landed him three goals and six points.  It seemed the Buffalo Sabres found a player that was going to lead the charge of the future from the third or fourth line.  I wouldn’t have complained too much, the guy played with energy.

Tim Murray must not have liked what he saw from the waiver wire pickup, as the team doesn’t qualify him and he will hit free agency.

Can/should the Buffalo Sabres revisit giving him a contract after noon today?  Sure, if no one picks him up, but I think there will be a few teams that come calling for Conacher.

Where are the big names going to end up?  [Bleacher Report].

The Buffalo Sabres aren’t going to make a splash, but that doesn’t make today any less interesting.  There are plenty of names with Buffalo connections available on free agent frenzy July 1.

Thomas Vanek is looking for a new home.  Ryan Miller is being wooed by the Vancouver Canucks.  Matt Moulson and Steve Ott will be available.

Christian Ehrhoff will be testing the market.  Wherever Ryan Miller doesn’t end up Jonas Hiller will likely sign.
