Buffalo Sabres Sign Tyson Strachan

Tim Murray added another piece to the Buffalo Sabres organization today, signing free agent defenseman Tyson Strachan to a deal.

The Buffalo Sabres signed Strachan to a one-year, two-way contract on Thursday. It’s reported to be worth $650,000 at the NHL level and $275,000 at the AHL level.

It seems like Strachan will join the Rochester Americans, filling in a gap on the blueline left by free agency and bringing some depth to the organization.

The news broke via Twitter from TSN’s Ryan Rishaug on Thursday morning:

Prior to being signed by the Sabres, Strachan was previously a group 3 unrestricted free agent of the Washington Capitals.

The 29-year-old will bring some veteran leadership to the young Rochester Americans squad that’s already lost two of its blueliners to free agency. Sabres prospects Nick Crawford and Matt Mackenzie were not tendered qualifying offers and became unrestricted free agents.

Strachan split this past season between the Washington Capitals and the AHL’s Hershey Bears. In 18 games with the Caps, he had two assists and 28 penalty minutes. He had 19 points (4-15) and 56 penalty minutes in 60 games with Hershey, notching a plus-13 rating in the meantime.

Over the years, Strachan has racked up 140 NHL games of experience and notched 16 points and 155 penalty minutes in that stretch.

His NHL tenure includes games played with the St. Louis Blues, Florida Panthers and the Capitals. In the AHL, he’s move around a bit more, playing with the Albany River Rats, Peoria Rivermen, San Antonio Rampage and Hershey.

Strachan is a Melfort, Saskatchewan native who attended Ohio State University from 2003 until 2007. He was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes 137th overall in 2003, but played just one game with their organization — in Albany in 2007.

Strachan also spent 25 games with the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL during the 2007-08 season.
