Buffalo Sabres Daily: Detroit Red Wings And Defensive Thoughts

Look out for the Buffalo Sabres…in a few years.  [Detroit Free Press].

Those are the words of the Detroit Free Press writer as he goes around the division scoping out the Detroit Red Wings division opponents.

I have to agree here – watch out for the Buffalo Sabres in a few years, but they are dangerous now.  Wait what?  Last season the Buffalo Sabres were the worst team in the league, and barely scored any goals.  Yep that statement is true (I woke up in a sarcastic mood; so I enjoy stating the obvious this morning).  Last year started with Ron Rolston and Darcy Regier running things, and the team had zero jump, no life, and no motivation.

Presto chango – new coach, new gm, new attitude, slightly different team.  Division opponents who try to sleep walk through a game with the Buffalo Sabres are going to get caught – and end up skating away at the end of the night with a loss.

The Detroit Red Wings slipped into the playoffs as an Eastern Conference Wild Card team – but they want to be better.  This year.  They aren’t much a different team, is their playoff streak in jeopardy?  The last time the Detroit Red Wings didn’t make the playoffs?  1989-1990.  I was seven.

Lack of seasoned veterans has Buffalo Sabres defense looking a lot different.  [Die By The Blade].

It isn’t even really fair to start setting up defensive pairs yet, because, well realistically who knows right?  Buffalo Sabres GM Tim Murray continues to sign free agent defenseman in the hopes of building up the depth of the Sabres and the Rochester Americans.  Tim Murray is trying to build a championship culture here, and he sees what happens to teams that try and compete without a deep defensive squad.

The Buffalo Sabres saw it first hand against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Training camp should give us an interesting peak at what the defense will look like this season.
