The Buffalo Sabres don’t really have any major player announcements to make right now, and no major overhauls that anyone is aware of, so why a major press conference called during the middle of August?
The Buffalo Sabres have been pushing for a league level event lately, and this could be the announcement the team has been waiting to make; waiting on league approval.
Don’t get your hopes up that the team is announcing an outdoor game this year, the Washington Capitals are still trying to figure out the details of their event, and the league hasn’t really revealed 2014-2015 plans for a major series of outdoor games.
The fact that John Koelmel, President of the HarborCenter will be present along with Ted Black and Buffalo mayor, makes me think that the Buffalo Sabres have either successfully pried the annual combine away from the clutches of the Toronto market, or the Buffalo Sabres have been selected as the key location of the 2016 NHL Entry draft.
Buffalo will have the space to host the NHL combine annually. With an ice rink at First Niagara Center that can be maintained earlier in the season, to the two arenas in the new HarborCenter, there is plenty of on ice space for the workouts. The team will also have enough space for the off ice workout portions of the combine as well.
Hotel spacing in the HarborCenter and surrounding areas that are close to the arena make Buffalo a prime spot for the combine.
Buffalo is already set to host the second annual All American Prospects game.
The draft is another interesting aspect of the announcement. A leak on the NHL Entry Draft Wikipidia page this morning could be the answer, as it lists Buffalo, along with First Niagara Center and Harbor Center as hosting the draft.
Buffalo has hosted the draft previously, with the 1991 draft taking place at Memorial Auditorium, and the 1998 draft at Marine Midland Arena.
While the Buffalo Sabres don’t want to be important players at the podium for the 2016 draft – they will be showcasing their newest building to the league and the world.
The Buffalo Sabres have a 1PM press conference today in which all/more details will be presented.
