Another day, another dollar, and one less day before the Sabres season starts up.
Or in this case, lots of dollars, as our first bit of news today comes from The Hockey News and highlights the top 10 unrestricted free agent signings in the NHL this summer. While the Sabres’ signings didn’t make the cut, two former Sabres players did.
First, there’s Thomas Vanek, whose 3-year, $19.5 million contract was ranked the 10th best in this offseason. The other former Sabres player on the list is, according to Adam Proteau, the top UFA signing this summer: Christian Ehrhoff to the Penguins.
In other free agent – and former Sabres players – news, take a look at David Leggio’s new mask for the upcoming 2014-2015 season.
Leggio is now a member of the New York Islanders organization and while it’s unclear right now if he’ll see any time in the NHL or simply be a key part of the AHL campaign, he’s got his mask. One of the features: Islanders legendary coach Al Arbour – who also has a connection to the Sabres organization.
Arbour was a defenseman with the Rochester Americans from 1962 until 1967. He won two Calder Cups with the Amerks and is a member of the team’s Hall of Fame. While it’s obviously meant as a tribute to Arbour’s time as a legendary Isles coach, it’s nice to see that Rochester connection on Leggio’s new mask, tracing him back to the Sabres organization, even in some small way.
While some pieces of the Sabres roster are seemingly set as October grows closer, there’s still some uncertainty out there, including the case of first round pick Sam Reinhart. Will he make the NHL team out of camp? Will he get a tryout but end up sent back to his WHL club? [Frozen Futures]
There’s a lot of questionable pieces in the Sabres system right now. Guys like Nikita Zadorov, Rasmus Ristolainen, even Johan Larsson, could end up in the NHL or be sent to the OHL (Zadorov) or back to the Amerks. In the end, it’s way too early to tell right now, but camp’s getting closer. The Traverse City tournament begins in just nine days and a roster for that should be coming soon. Training camp begins right around that time and before you know it, preseason will be upon us.
