Suspensions and Salary Cap Issues

Good morning, Buffalo Sabres fans. Hard to believe it’s already near mid-November. The days just seem to be flying by. Before you know it, Thanksgiving will be upon us and then those fateful December holidays coming soon. It’s already that time of the year where some of the stores are filled with Christmas decor – wow.

Anyways, back to the hockey world. First up, Buffalo Sabres GM Tim Murray said that a member of the Buffalo Sabres organization could be facing a one-game suspension for an off-ice incident, according to what he told radio station WGR-550. Murray later clarified that the player in question is not on the Sabres, but is property of the team.

This could mean a number of things — is it someone playing in the AHL with the Rochester Americans, or the ECHL with the Elmira Jackals? It could also be a player in one of the CHL leagues or even a college athlete. Either way, I’m sure the news will have to come out sooner or later if the suspension is indeed handed out.

In other suspension news, Tyler Ennis did not receive any extracurricular discipline for his incident in Friday’s game against Edmonton. Ennis made contact with a linesman at the end of the game against the Oilers and received a game misconduct. In the end, that would be all the punishment he’d receive.

As the Buffalo Sabres prepare to hit the road for a couple games in St. Louis and Minnesota this week, one player who may not be joining them is forward Johan Larsson, who was reassigned to the AHL’s Amerks after four games with the NHL club.

On a more general topic, there seems to be potential that the NHL salary cap will not rise next season; instead, it would remain in its current range.

If this is indeed the case, general managers around the league really need to think about the contracts they’re handing out, in order to avoid facing some serious issues next season. While the Buffalo Sabres aren’t that close to the cap ceiling, there are plenty of teams in the NHL that would have to contend with that issue, including the Chicago Blackhawks.

Then there’s the Los Angeles Kings, who already had to deal with salary cap issues. The team was forced  to play with just five defensemen after coming up $160 short in cap space for a call-up after an injury to Robyn Regehr.

So that’s the weekend scoop, folks. Did any of our fine Sabre Noise readers make it out to (716) Food and Sport this weekend? What did you think?
