Buffalo Sabres Daily: Trade Deadline Talk

facebooktwitterreddit

Good morning, Buffalo Sabres fans…. or should I say “Buffalo Amerks” fans, as Tim Murray traded away four roster players prior to Monday’s NHL trade deadline. Two forwards will need to be recalled from the Amerks as a result of the Sabres’ trades, in order to replace the slots of Chris Stewart, Torrey Mitchell and Brian Flynn. Tyler Ennis‘ return to the lineup will likely fill one spot.

The recalls should be announced this morning, as the players will join the team in Tampa Bay prior to tonight’s game against the Lightning. My bets would be on Tim Schaller, who should certainly be the next call-up. But who else? Mikhail Grigorenko is the team’s next leading scorer, but he’s missed a good chunk of games recently due to injury, and I wouldn’t throw him right back into the ring at the NHL level.

The next two forwards in terms of points would be Jerry D’Amigo and Brayden Irwin, who have 26 and 25 points each on the season, respectively. It’s possible one of them could get the call — which would be their first to the Buffalo Sabres.

Down the pipeline, the Elmira Jackals lost Kevin Sundher and Colin Jacobs, as the pair of forwards have been called up to the Amerks to replace whichever forwards are headed to Buffalo.

In related AHL news, the Buffalo Sabres assigned (on paper only) Philip Varone, Zac Dalpe and Johan Larsson to the Rochester Americans on Monday. AHL rules state that a player must be on the roster by 3 p.m. Monday in order to be eligible for the playoffs. Though the Amerks seem likely to miss the postseason, it’s an important move to give them the chance to get those players back.

Of course, it was a paper transaction, as the trio remain with the Sabres and will play tonight against the Lightning.

Now, let’s take a minute to talk about the NHL trade deadline. There were a lot of moving pieces prior to the deadline, not just on Monday but over the weekend as well. Jaromir Jagr joined the Panthers; Antoine Vermette became a Chicago Blackhawk. Keith Yandle contributes to the NY Rangers, while the Leafs shipped out David Clarkson.

Most notably, the Buffalo Sabres made four trades on Monday, shipping out impending RFA Brian Flynn and impending UFAs Chris Stewart, Torrey Mitchell and Michal Neuvirth. These moves come in addition to the ones that sent Tyler Myers, Drew Stafford and Jhonas Enroth out of Buffalo.

All in all: Buffalo Sabres fans were the winners of Monday’s deadine. [SB Nation]

USA Today proclaims the Rangers as the big winners of the trade deadline, while NHL.com hails the Anaheim Ducks as one of the top teams at the deadline.

Of course, there’s still some questions after this year’s deadline. [USA Today]

For the Buffalo Sabres, there are also a lot of questions. Will Anders Lindback finally play his first game in the blue and gold? On July 1, will the team sign any of its players that were traded away?
