Buffalo Sabres Players at World Championships: May 3

A pair of Buffalo Sabres players have already made their mark for their respective teams at the 2015 IIHF World Championships in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic.

The tournament began on May 1st and runs through May 17th. Buffalo Sabres center Tyler Ennis is playing on Team Canada, while Buffalo Sabres defenseman Andrej Meszaros is suiting up for his native Slovakia.

The tournament began on May 1 with four games on tap for the tournament. Team Canada defeated Latvia by a score of 6-1, while the United States beat Finland 5-1. The Swedes beat the Czech Republic 6-5, while Russia beat Norway 6-2.

Ennis played 17:10 ice time in the win for Canada. Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and two assists, while Matt Duchene, Tyler Toffoli and Sidney Crosby also scored for Canada. Jason Spezza had two goals and an assist.

For the United States in their win over Finland, goals came from Nick Bonino, Steve Moses, Matt Hendricks (2) and Dan Sexton.

World Championships action continued on Saturday with six games on tap. Meszaros and the Slovakian team defeated Denmark 4-3 in their opening game of the tournament.
Meszaros registered one shot on goal and a plus-one rating in 21:28 ice time. He led all Slovakian skaters in ice time.

  • Elsewhere on Saturday, the United States defeated Norway by a score of 2-1. Trevor Lewis and Brock Nelson had the goals for Team USA.

    Finally, the action continued on Sunday, when Team Canada had a decisive 10-0 victory over Germany, while the Slovakian team beat Belarus by a score of 2-1.

    Ennis had a goal and an assist with a pair of shots on goal and a plus-2 in 15:13 ice time in the win.

    Claude Giroux led Canada with a goal and two assists, while Cody Eakin had a pair of goals for Canada.

    Meszaros came up huge for Slovakia in their win over Belarus, scoring both goals — including the overtime game-winner. He had four shots on goal and was a plus-2 in the win. Once again, he led the team in ice time, with 24:05 played.

    IIHF World Championships action continues on Monday with four games. It’ll be Latvia vs. Sweden and Russia versus the United States. Ennis and Team Canada face the Czechs, while Norway and Finland will also face off.

    Meszaros’ next game is Tuesday, when Slovakia faces Slovenia.

    As it stands entering Monday’s games, Canada sits atop the Group A standings with a 2-0-0-0 record and six points, plus a 16:1 goals-for/goals-against differential. Russia and the United States are both tops in the Group B standings with matching 2-0-0-0 records and six points. Russia has the edge with an 11:5 goal differential, compared to the USA’s 7:2.
