Buffalo Sabres Links: Jack Eichel, Ryan O’Reilly

Happy Cinco de Mayo, Buffalo Sabres fans!

To start your morning off on the “right” foot, check this out — you can already see Jack Eichel in a Buffalo Sabres jersey.

Well, okay… not really. But you can see a Photoshopped photo of Eichel in a Buffalo Sabres sweater on the United States cover of The Hockey News’ Draft Preview edition.

The American edition of the draft preview shows Eichel in a Sabres jersey, while the Canadian edition features a photo of Connor McDavid in Edmonton Oilers gear.

Well… isn’t that interesting, to say the least? It’s one thing to imagine the Buffalo Sabres picking Eichel and Oilers selecting McDavid, and another thing completely to “see” those guys in the team jerseys. Weird.

(Side note: couldn’t they have found a photo of Eichel where he was, oh, smiling? Or showing some emotion? That cover looks like he’s saying “Wow, I don’t want to be here.”)

While the drafting of Eichel will likely be the biggest headline for Buffalo Sabres news this summer, it won’t be the only move the team makes — they’ll be ready to make some deals. [The Fourth Period]

Who would you like to see the Buffalo Sabres pick up this offseason?

  • One of the names that’s been thrown around for a while regarding the Buffalo Sabres has been Colorado Avalanche forward Ryan O’Reilly. Could this be the year that he really does finally join the team?

As TFP’s article notes, O’Reilly still has a year left on his contract, which might prove to be a sticky point if the Sabres hope to get him this summer.

The next finalists for an NHL Award have been announced — this time, for the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award.

In other big news on Monday, the New Jersey Devils have named Ray Shero as the team’s new general manager. [NHL.com]

Lou Lamoriello will stay on with the organization, continuing to serve as president of hockey operations for the team. One of Shero’s first big moves will be to hire a coach; we all know there’s a decent crop of guys out there looking for a job. So how fast will that hiring come? Will the Devils sweep up and take one of the guys the Sabres could be looking at?

Finally this morning, Brandon Prust claims an NHL official called him “every name in the book” during Sunday’s game, and now, he’s getting some backlash.

The league is going to investigate the incident, but former NHL ref Kerry Fraser said that Prust has made himself a “marked man” by “embarrassing” the ref in his post-game interview.
