Buffalo Sabres Roster Options: The Waiver Wire
The Buffalo Sabres push on towards the regular season, and as training camps end, there are some veteran players up for grabs on the waiver wire. Many teams are looking to cut costs on the salary cap, and others are looking to shed players that just don’t fit their team’s motto. The Buffalo Sabres are still trimming their roster down, but there are some players on the waiver wire that might be worth claiming.

The Buffalo Sabres are still looking for some depth in some thin areas, and would benefit from taking a good look at some of these potential waiver claimed candidates.

Dustin Tokarski
Dustin Tokarski served as a backup to Carey Price in Montreal last season, and has shown some solid potential. In past playoffs, there was a time when Price went down with an injury and Tokarski was the man turned to for support. In the games that he played in relief, Tokarski was not a star, but he was consistent.
That alone is one of the best reasons to pick up Tokarski off of waivers; his consistency. The goaltending situation in Buffalo is a little shaky for sure, so having that extra goaltending option in Tokarski would be very reassuring.
Andrew MacDonald
Andy MacDonald has been a defenseman for the Philadelphia Flyers for the past couple of seasons. Is his time there, he has not risen to the expectations that were had for him (hence his waiver status) and it seems like the Flyers are finished with him. The Buffalo Sabres are thin on defense and could use a veteran defender like MacDonald to round out their options.
As a former top four pairing defender, MacDonald brings good value to the table off os a waiver claim. He would add depth to the blue line, and give much more leadership than a player like Carlo Colaiacovo will.
These two players are the best options available from the limited list that came out today, but they both add great value for what they offer. Both additions would round out weak positions in the Sabres roster, and would give much more confidence to the fans in that regard.
Personally, I think that picking up MacDonald is the best thing to do for Buffalo right now. The defense is injured, and the core is thin, and MacDonald would make for a great second defensive pairing with either Ristolainen or Bogosian. He is the left handed shot that Tim Murray was looking for over the summer, and plays a similar role as Johny Oduya does.
Tokarski would just be goalie insurance.
What do you guys think? Pick these guys up, or leave them to the minors?
