A signing that flew under the radar this past week was that of center Colin Jacobs‘ to a three-year entry level contract on May 30th. Standing at 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, this Coppell, Texas native was selected by the Sabres in the fourth round at the 107th pick.

But the lingering question is, who is Colin Jacobs?

The twenty-year old spent the majority of his career with the WHL‘s Seattle Thunderbirds, where he spent four seasons, amassing 44 goals, 45 assists, and 234 penalty minutes. His playoff career with Seattle is short, playing in only four games, in which he recorded 2 goals and 1 assist.

It was in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft that his professional career was about to start.

From there, Jacobs went to the Prince George Cougars, in the 2012-2013 season, in a trade that sent another player and two draft picks to the Thunderbirds. As a Cougar, Jacobs suited up for 66 games. During his one year tenure with Prince George, he scored 25 goals, 28 assists, and accumulated 95 penalty minutes.

It was the second time in his career that he recorded 20+ goals, earning him the Cougars’ Player of the Year Award.

On March 16, 2013, Jacobs’ season with the Cougars came to an end, with the Kamloops Blazers romping the Cougars, 7-0, putting the Cougars at ninth place.

Three days later, Jacobs was signed to the Buffalo Sabres affiliate, the Rochester Americans, to an amateur try-out contract. He played the remainder of the season on the Amerks’ roster, even going into the playoffs.

While with the Americans, Jacobs scored 1 goal, and 2 assists in an 11-game span.

So what can he do?

Jacobs has a right-handed shot, quick feet, and good vision on the ice, making him a very skilled play maker. Along with honing in on his shot, he has the potential to mature inside the Sabres/Americans organization.

Why do the Sabres have him?

Going off of the offseason to last year, the Sabres were all about grit and the more physical presence on the ice. This is where I believe Jacobs will fit perfectly fine with the team. He is a strong player, who will play the grit game if needed.

Is he a good fit?

I believe that only time will tell. He has some time to put in, granted he is only twenty. I believe he will be a good call up if he is needed. The Sabres will definitely look into him as they take to the ice when camp opens up. To me, Colin Jacobs, if he puts the time in, will definitely be a solid player in this organization.

The irony of it all, Colin Jacobs gained his interest in hockey after watching the Dallas Stars’ win the Stanley Cup, against the Buffalo Sabres. So we will see if the team he watched get beaten by his hometown team is the team he will grow under.

The question for him is, Goal or No Goal?
