Following a disheartening loss against the Montreal Canadiens this past Thursday, the Buffalo Sabres were back home at the First Niagara Center today battling the Philadelphia Flyers for bragging rights at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Despite being outshot in this one, the Buffalo Sabres managed to outlast the Flyers and win it by a final of 1-0.

The big news in Buffalo today was the signing of UMass-Lowell defenseman Chad Ruhwedel to an entry level contract. This comes after losing defensemen Tyler Myers for the remainder of the season to a broken leg. Ruhwedel made his first career NHL start for Buffalo today and saw a decent amount of ice time, totaling 13 minutes through 18 shifts.

1st Period:

Patrick Kaleta got the crowd into it early on by squaring off against Philadelphia’s Oliver Lauridsen just a minute and a half into the game. Kaleta landed about a dozen good ones before the fight got broken up.

The first period remained scoreless throughout but there was no shortage of physical play between these two teams.

The Sabres trailed The Flyers in shots 6-10 after the first.

2nd Period:

Second verse, same as the first. The scoreless drought between these two teams continued into the second period as neither team gained any ground on the scoreboard.

Jhonas Enroth continued to look solid in net for Buffalo making some key saves to keep the Flyers off the board.

3rd Period:

Buffalo broke the scoreless tie with an early goal in the third. Christian Ehrhoff got credit for the unlikely goal that ricocheted off the back boards and slipped in off of Steve Mason’s skate.

Despite a valiant effort poured on by Philadelphia late in the third period, the Sabres were able to hold on and win it by a final score of 1-0. Jhonas Enroth recorded his third career shutout and looked great in net for Buffalo, earning the first star of the game.

My Thoughts:

I know what we were all thinking today, who the heck is Chad Ruhwedel? I can just picture it in my mind: Chad’s out last night with his hockey buddies at the local college bar, and then next thing he knows he’s on the phone with Buffalo and they’re asking him if he’s interested in playing some hockey tomorrow. Tough life, right?

There’s really nothing to complain about with this move by Buffalo. At this point with their season, why not. They pick up a good prospect for almost nothing and he gets a few games to try-out this season. With Tyler Myers out for the rest of the year, I don’t see anything wrong with giving this kid a shot. The Sabres are at a point this year where they’re just playing for pride and jockeying for a better draft position.

With Ryan Miller‘s future in Buffalo uncertain, it’s reliving to see Enroth playing well between the pipes. He really carried the load in this one, stopping all 29 of Philadelphia’s shots. Honestly, the Sabres got fortunate that Philly didn’t break the shutout and find the back of the net late in the third. I had to cover my eyes the last few minutes of the game with the constant barrage of shots and scoring chances. If the Flyers had played with that kind of offensive pressure for the majority of the game, it would have been a much different story.

The Sabres are back home tomorrow taking on the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Today’s game between the Buffalo Sabres and Philadelphia Flyers featured two teams who have suffered the similar fate of entering the season with high expectations, and will be ending the season in two weeks without going to the playoffs. Both squads entered the game with similar stats as well – both teams were just 4-4-2 in their last 10 games, the Sabres have 38 points and the Flyers have 37, the Sabres have scored 107 goals and the Flyers 108, the Sabres have surrendered 127 goals and the Flyers 125.

Unfortunately for those who watched the game, both teams played similarly poor.

The game had an exciting beginning, as Patrick Kaleta and Oliver Lauridsen dropped the gloves, with Kaleta pummeling Lauridsen with numerous punches. Then, the game settled into mediocrity, and looked very much like a preseason hockey game. The Sabres managed just 6 shots in the opening period, and a mere 2 shots through the first 10 minutes of the second period. At the end of 2 periods, the score was an exhilarating 0-0.

In their defense, Buffalo was coming off arguably their worst performance of the season against the Montreal Canadiens (hard to believe, I know, considering how many awful games they have played). Yet, today’s Sabres appeared to be more mobile, as they kept their skates moving and didn’t find themselves hemmed in their own end repeatedly. The team was more active, and was able to create some decent odd-man rushes, which they could not capitalize on.

The rotating door of Buffalo players saw the exit of Tyler Myers, who was lost for the season to a broken leg, and the debut of Chad Ruhwedel, freshly signed out of college. Unlike most defensemen who make their NHL debut, Ruhwedel looked confident, and played with composure and poise. Tyler Ennis was moved from center to join Thomas Vanek and Cody Hodgson on the top line, and Marcus Foligno was moved to center with Drew Stafford and John Scott. The new version of the top line was creative offensively, though unable to finish and get on the scoreboard. The trio looked lazy defensively.

The Sabres caught a lucky bounce early in the 3rd period, as a Christian Ehrhoff shot bounced off the back boards, the ricocheted off the pads of the Flyers netminder Steve Mason, and into the net. It was the only goal of the game.

The star of this matchup was easily Jhonas Enroth, who shut-out Philadelphia on the strength of 29 saves, including numerous highlight reel stops. Enroth has benefitted from more regular starts since Ron Rolston took over as Buffalo coach, and he has responded with consistently good performances. Tonight, he confidently squared up to the shooters, and eliminated rebounds well. The Sabres goat was Drew Stafford, who continues to play miserably.

By gaining 2 points, the Sabres moved further away from a potential top draft-pick, and closer to a frustrating middle-of-the-pack-but-playoff-less finish. The Sabres host the Tampa Bay Lightning tomorrow at 5pm. Make sure to check back in to Sabre Noise for our game recap from AJ Haller.
