Big news in Buffalo today as Sabres owner Terry Pegula announces a contract extension for the Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier. The terms of the contract have not yet been released. Regier is in his 16^th season as the Sabres GM and is the longest serving GM in the NHL.

Regier joined the team in 1997 and brought in Lindy Ruff as head coach after Ted Nolan. This seems like a questionable move for the franchise going forward as they have not won a championship under Regier and have missed the playoffs in 6 out of the last 10 seasons.

”He is a talented guy,” Pegula said today, “from what I read, maybe not everyone agrees with that.”

The sabres open up their season tomorrow at home against the Philedelphia Flyers.

In an interview given on WGR550 AM, before Friday night’s 2-1 shootout win against the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier said that he and the agent for Paul Gaustad have had talks, and the two would meet again on Sunday. This is significant, of course, as Monday is the NHL trade deadline.

I would imagine that if a deal cannot be worked out, Regier has, or will, let it be known to either Gaustad –  or his agent – that the Sabres would have to entertain trade offers  for the services of the 30 year-old, Fargo, North Dakota native, who is set to become an unrestricted free-agent on July 1st.
