Sekera, Slovakia Suffer 3-1 Loss to Russia
Buffalo Sabres defensemen Andrej Sekera and Christian Ehrhoff were in action at the 2013 IIHF World Championships on May 12. Slovakia faced Russia, dropping the game by a 3-1 decision, while Germany dropped a 3-0 game to the United States.
Sekera was kept off the scoresheet during the game, as Slovakia’s lone goal came unassisted from Branko Radivojevic. Sekera was on the ice for the goal, but was also on the ice for Russia’s last two goals of the game, giving him a minus-1 on the night.
He had four shots – two apiece in the first and third periods – and led Slovakia with over 24 minutes of ice time. Only one other player, defenseman Vladimir Mihalik, played over 20 minutes of time during the game.
Russia’s Alexander Radulov, Ilya Kovalchuk and Denis Denisov scored in the game. Radulov had a goal and an assist, while Kovalchuk – who was on the ice for all four goals during the game – was named Russia’s best player of the game. Radivojevic was given that honor for Slovakia.
Slovakia has one preliminary round game remaining in the 2013 IIHF World Championships. They’ll face the United States on May 14. The American squad will look for another win after coming out on top of Germany 3-0 on Sunday.
Buffalo Sabres defenseman Christian Ehrhoff was also in action on Sunday, as his German squad faced the United States. Bobby Butler, Paul Stastny and Stephen Gionta scored as the United States defeated Germany, 3-0.
Ehrhoff had four shots and two penalty minutes and was a minus-1. His 24:15 of ice time led the team, with only one other player – Frank Hordler – hitting the 20 minute mark.
Patrick Hager and Chris Butler (former Buffalo Sabres defenseman) were named best players of the game for Germany and the United States, respectively.
Germany will face France in its final preliminary round game of the 2013 IIHF World Cahmpionships on May 14.
