Buffalo Sabres Jack Eichel Is Finally Playing Like An All-Star

The face of the Sabres may have started off slow, but after a strong December, Jack is back!

The Buffalo Sabres enjoyed their best month of the 2017-18 season in December, going 4-5-4 and picking up 12 points in the final month of 2017.

Granted, earning 12 out of a possible 26 points is not considered good by any means, but Sabres fans will take what they can get.  No one wants to talk about moral victories, but the fact that the Sabres were in a position to win eight of their 13 games last month is proof that the team is making some progress under new head coach Phil Housley.

Even better, the Sabres saw their face of the franchise, Jack Eichel, kick his game up a few notches. Eichel wracked up 16 points in Buffalo’s 13 games last month, and enjoyed five multi-point games.  The most impressive thing about Eichel’s December? At no point did he suffer back-to-back games in which he failed to record at least one point. As a matter of fact, there were only four games during that stretch that Eichel failed to record a point.

Thanks to his Herculean efforts in December, Eichel now owns 35 points which has him ranked at No. 35 among all NHL players.  Eichel also has more goals than Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, and Johnny Gaudreau, all of whom currently can be found on the leaderboard for the 2018 NHL All-Star Fan Vote. He is Buffalo’s leading scorer and is clearly the reason why the team was competitive in eight games last month.

As a result, our piece about how Evander Kane was the only player on the Sabres roster deserving of All-Star votes can now be dismissed. Jack Eichel is playing at an elite level right now, and should he keep it up, he should earn bucket-loads of All-Star votes. Whether he makes the team is besides the point – the Buffalo Sabres are not the darlings of the NHL right now.  All that matters it that Eichel is figuring things out and becoming the scintillating player Sabres fans were hoping to see when the season started back in October.
