The excitement is for good reason. The 24 year old Sweden native has a sweet shot and has a uncommon knack for putting himself in excellent positions to score.
Victor was promoted the Buffalo from the AHL Rochester American’s late last season. In 6 games Victor scored 2 goals and had 2 assists. This sample size, albeit small, showed that Victor could play in the big leagues and showed that Buffalo may have found a gem in the 7th round of the 2014 draft.
However, with such a great showing in late 2018-19, the expectations for Olofsson were extremely high. Many experts and fans expect Victor to be a massive part of the Sabres offense this season, there hasn’t been a rookie since Jack Eichel that has carried the load of such high expectations.
So the question is, can Victor live up to all the hype? The simple answer to that question is yes.
Here’s why. Victor already has an NHL level shot, he goes through his shooting motion very fluidly and the end result is a powerful shot. Victor seems to have a good feel for Coach Ralph Krueger‘s offense and should fit perfectly for what Krueger wants to do.
Coach Krueger likes to be constantly on the attack with his offense and values getting a lot of shots on goal. With Victor’s smooth shot and accuracy he will have ample opportunities to score.
What Victor needs to do to help himself succeed is to continue working on power play situations. From the small sample size we’ve seen, it seems like Victor may get a little to excited during power plays and sometimes gets in his own way.
There’s no debating the potential with Victor Olofsson, it’s just a matter of if he can achieve it.
