After having one of the best starts to a season in recent history, the Buffalo Sabres have gone 1-8-2 over their last 11 games. The question now is can they still make the playoffs.
Just when the Buffalo Sabres make you begin to believe, they kick you in the groin and rip your heart out of your chest. Alright, that might’ve been a little dramatic but that’s honestly how it has felt.
After beginning the year 10-1-1 the Sabres have slipped to 11-9-3 and have looked awful on the ice. The lethal Buffalo powerplay that was considered the best in the NHL to start the year has looked awful the last month, the team has struggled to score when given the man advantage.
The problems hardly end with the powerplay however. The Sabres defense that was excellent in man to man defense and at the blue line early in the season has now looked very pedestrian. Sabres fans hoped that this season would be a breakout year for last years number one overall pick Rasmus Dahlin. Unfortunately that hasn’t been the case, Dahlin has appeared to regress a little if anything (especially with mistakes at the blue line) and has some work to do to get back on track.
But the question is can the Buffalo Sabres still make the playoffs. The answer is yes. This is a team that has talented pieces on every defensive pairing and offensive line they have. It’s just a matter of the Sabres putting together complete games. If Buffalo is going to make the playoffs, consistency is going to be key. The Sabres aren’t going to make the playoffs if they continue to back up hot stretches with extremely cold stretches. The team has to find a way to put together a complete effort night in and night out.
As frustrating as this run has been don’t give up hope yet, this team isn’t done yet.
