Buffalo Sabres Season Review: Month By Month

facebooktwitterreddit

Everyone knows how the Buffalo Sabres season ended. The team finished dead last in the NHL for the second straight season, ended up with the second-overall draft pick yet again, and can only hope to get better when the next NHL season rolls around.

Today, let’s look back at how the Buffalo Sabres got to 30th, with a month-by-month review of the season.

Two sidenotes: the Sabres were third in the NHL in man-games lost. Injuries were a real problem for the team. They also traded away some valuable players, like goaltender Jhonas Enroth, big defenseman Tyler Myers and forward Drew Stafford. There were 43 AHL recalls throughout the season, too.

October 2014

Monthly Record: 2-8-1
Overall Record: 2-8-1

It wasn’t a good month to start for the Sabres, who lost their first three games of the season. They took just five of a possible 22 points in October and were shutout in four of 11 games. They were outscored by their opponents by a margin of 36-13. Suffice to say that’s not the best way to kick things off, and certainly not how the Buffalo Sabres wanted to start the season.

November 2014

Monthly Record: 6-6-1
Overall Record: 8-14-2

November was, in ways, a better month for the Sabres. Though they still came out with a losing record and a five-game losing streak in the midst of the month, there were some highlights. Think about the 6-2 defeat of the Leafs, or Tyler Ennis’ incredible, backhand, no-look goal in the game against Montreal. Unfortunately, when the Sabres did lose this month, they lost big, and were overall outscored by their opponents by a 40-30 margin.

December 2014

Monthly Record: 6-7-1
Overall Record: 14-21-3

December was highlighted by a four-game winning streak that saw the Buffalo Sabres defeat the Los Angeles Kings, Calgary Flames, Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators. Unfortunately, the team followed that up with a subsequent four-game losing streak, and ended the month with a pair of losses that would lead into a winless January.

January 2015

Monthly Record: 0-12-0
Overall Record: 14-33-3

If there were any doubts that the Buffalo Sabres were having a terrible season, January all but set everything in stone for the Sabres. They were winless throughout the month in their longest losing streak of the season (14 games, dating from December 29 – January 30) and were outscored 51-18 . The Sabres nearly reached an NHL milestone – one I’m sure they were glad to miss out on.

February 2015

Monthly Record: 5-6-2
Overall Record: 19-39-5

If January was an awful month, February was slightly better. The team started the month with a win, ending their 14-game losing streak, but followed that up with a shutout loss to the Blues. A four-game losing streak in the middle of the month was followed by spots of wins and losses, but the team was only outscored 33-31 this month. Progress.

    Monthly Record: 2-8-3
    Overall Record: 21-47-8

After a not-so-terrible February, the Buffalo Sabres returned to their struggle-bus ways in March. They started the month with a six-game losing streak; after one win, they lost five of the last six games of the month, too. The month included three shutouts, and the biggest highlight was a 2-1 shootout win over the Bruins on St. Patrick’s Day.

    April 2015

    Monthly Record: 2-4-0
    Overall Record: 23-51-8

The Sabres finished out the season with a losing month, which seemed to be the standard for the team. The highlights of this month were a 4-3 win over Toronto (isn’t it always a good feeling when we beat the Leafs?) and a 4-3 win over the Hurricanes. With a loss to the Blue Jackets in their penultimate game, the Sabres clinched 30th, and that’s where they would finish the year off.

So there you have it. The season was filled with losing streaks, including the winless month of February and multiple four- and five-game losing stands. It wasn’t an easy season, but look at the bright side – realistically, things can only go up from here for the Buffalo Sabres.
