Team chemistry and trust

In March and April 2022, the Buffalo Sabres built sound team chemistry. This chemistry allowed them to stand up to and even defeat some of the NHL’s best teams. And given the Sabres relative youth, this chemistry will only continue to grow throughout the next few seasons.

Adding a big name might sound like a good idea, but it will disrupt this chemistry. Maybe it won’t, but there is always a massive curve when an older, established player walks into the locker room and skates with a new team. Especially a player that has spent years playing in another system.

For the Sabres, it just isn’t worth the risk. Further, by refraining from signing a big-name player to fill a major role, it tells the roster that the front office and the coaching staff has trust in them. And that will go a long way for the team’s overall morale.

Overall, expect the Sabres to sign a few free agents this summer. But don’t expect any big names to come. Instead, look for bargain names who can fill a specific niche role for the team. And you can further expect them to re-sign a few key bargain free agents from last season.
